Columbo at its usual best,
By Philémon Paquette (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Columbo: The Complete Fourth Season (DVD)
It had been a while since I watched Peter Falk as Columbo, and while the show was and is formulaic- what a formula. You know Columbo is going to have just one more question, and with each additional question he is going to get closer to the arrest, yet it remains a pleasure to see how a question can lead to an answer. If you like Columbo as much as I do, you will enjoy this Fourth Season.

All Excellent Episodes,
By A customer (Toronto, Canda) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Columbo: The Complete Fourth Season (DVD)
In Year 4 everybody’s favourite rumpled detective matches wits with a good assortment of clever murderers: Robert Conrad, Dick Van Dyke, Patrick McGoohan, Robert Vaughn, Oskar Werner and George Hamilton.Their schemes are more intricate than on average, and it’s the usual combination of tiny oversights and excessive verbosity that trip them up. In the Dick Van Dyke and George Hamilton episodes it’s the latter that’s particularly well crafted, Columbo finally tricking them into incriminating themselves. The writing of these episodes are as good as ever, with the dialogue between Columbo and the murderers particularly sharp. Not only that, but some scenes where Columbo interviews witnesses and relatives are truly memorable for their depth and wit. e.g. Vitto Scotti playing an erudite bum, interviewed at a soup kitchen (in the Dick Van Dyke episode). Additionally, the murder victims in Year 4 aren’t the usual simpering innocents – In a couple of cases you’re not disappointed they’ve being done away with. Scattered in supporting roles throughout the episodes are eventual movie/television regulars like Pat Harrington, Gretchen Corbett, Joanna Cameron, Antoinette Bower, Dean Stockwell, Lesley Ann Warren and Bruno Kirby. [Incidently, I don’t think Columbo’s final deduction is enough to convict Robert Conrad. Conrad would have known about the gym clothes if the victim had told him about it on the phone. Conrad need only tell Columbo he forgot about that part of the phone conversation.] The only criticism I have of this package is of the producers’ decision to include a Mrs. Columbo episode. I suppose one could view it as a no-harm-done bonus, especially since Year 4 consists only of six Columbo episodes. But frankly the Mrs. C episode is so lame (as was that whole mercifully short-lived series) it detracts from the overall quality.
