Best TV detective of all time,
This review is from: Columbo: The Complete Fifth Season (DVD)
There have been many complaints (see amazon.com) about the Columbo series from various fans. Some have complained about the "two-sided" discs in Season three. I suspect that some of the problems with "skips" on these discs have to do with the DVD player's in use. I have had no problem with any of them. Others have complained about having no "extra's" on the discs. Lighten up, guys and gals. COLUMBO IS FINALLY ON DVD!!! It is a Columbo fan's dream come true. I LOVE them all! Courts in the U.S. have declared it is prefectly legal to make "backup" copies strictly for personal use. Anyone with concerns about the double-sided discs should do so. I have just viewed the DELIGHTFUL season FOUR, and I anxiously await season FIVE on June 27. I have all 69 of the Columbo episodes on VHS tape from TV, but what a pleasure to have them on DVD. And, of course, since VCR's did not exist for the general public when the original 45 shows aired, most of the shows were done on a re-run basis with footage cut for extra commercials. WHAT A PURE PLEASURE to see scenes not viewed since the shows were originally aired! I heartily recommend Seasons 1 to 4 for the true Columbo fan. GET 'EM!! ENJOY then for what they are! Classic TV in every sense of the word!

Columbo Season 5,

The shambling, low-key cop just keeps getting better and better. Much to my suprise I hadn't seen any of the movies in this set. Columbo still ends his interrogation with ... "one move question" and doggedly follows the killer finally cathing him in the end as we all knew he would. Each disc contains only one movie. This should answer the complaints of some of those who bought season three. The only difference is a smaller plastic box which in my book is an improvement because it takes up less room. The direction is tight. And Peter Falk is at his best in his rumpled raincoat. The story with Ricardo Montalban (a talented actor)is a different kind of story showing the cultural differences related to bull-fighting in Mexico. While still following Columbo's style, he now has a Mexican cop as a side-kick. Janet Leigh, (a fine actress who became famous in Psycho)and Robert Vaughn (formerly the star of the Man from Uncle where he learned his television craft) are fine advisaries. Sal Mineo as a supporting actor is a suprise. He's seldom seen anymore and is an under-rated actor.
This set has a Mrs. Columbo episode promoting the spin-off. Skip it. If your a Columbo fan this one will top off your collection. I found it to be better than some of the previous seasons if that's possible. I suspect Peter Falk has prefected his role without getting bored. He's terrific in this season and Amazon is the cheapest game in town this time.

And Columbo's first name is...!,

A terrific set of episodes in Season 5. My only complaint is that the air dates and episode descriptions are missing. We're not getting any commentary or behind the scenes material, so would it be too much to ask for what was included in earlier sets? The real bonus is the discovery of Columbo's first name! In "A Matter of Honor", Columbo must give a Mexican police officer his I.D. following a car accident. If you zoom in you can clearly see his signature: "Frank Columbo".
