Armchair sleuths, get out your trenchcoats: Universal has released the sophomore season (1972-73) of the classic detective series Columbo, starring Peter Falk as the sage but rumpled police lieutenant. As with the first season, there's plenty of star power in front of and behind the camera to abet Falk in these eight 90- and 120-minute episodes: John Cassavetes stars in the season premiere, Etude in Black, as a philandering symphony conductor, with Blythe Danner and Hollywood legend Myrna Loy in support; Oscar winner Ray Milland is a scheming orchid grower in "The Greenhouse Jungle," co-starring Bradford Dillman and William Smith; Robert Culp and Dean Stockwell are a football team manager and owner, respectively, whose disagreements blossom into murder in "The Most Crucial Game"; and Jeanette Nolan offers stellar comic relief in "Double Shock," which features Martin Landau as identical twins--one of whom has murdered their uncle. Performances by Richard Basehart, Laurence Harvey, Leonard Nimoy, Anne Francis, Anne Baxter, and Mel Ferrer also highlight the season; direction by small-screen stalwarts like Boris Sagal, Jeremy Paul Kagan, and Nicholas Colasanto ("Coach" on Cheers) and scripts by Stephen Bochco also bring quality and style to the proceedings. Sadly, no extras are available in this five-disc set, but the stellar image and sound quality (and lack of commercials) should appeal to series fans and newcomers alike. --Paul Gaita

I thoroughly enjoyed this set. All the actors put in wonderful performances. One of the best is Jeanette Nolan in Double Shock. Peter Falk as usual is awesome. For me the whole feel of series keeps me watching them over and over. It's wild to see how things looked in the early 70's. The film quality and overall production is awesome. All that is missing are some special features - would be nice to see an interview / biography of Peter Falk. And now - the wait is on for Season 3!

Though many remember and enjoy Columbo (and rightly so), few may remember Barbara Colby who skillfully plays blackmailer/murder victim Lily LaSanka in this episode. Ms. Colby was a gifted actor, with an earthy sexiness, who made a name for herself on the stage. In the early seventies she brought herself and her talent to broader audiences through her work on television. Twice she played a hooker named Sherry on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show", with hysterical results. So well liked was she by the MTM team, that she was cast as Julie Erskine on the hit spin-off series "Phyllis". The comic chemistry between Cloris Leachman and Colby was magical. Together with Richard Schaal they had a unique and wonderful energy that showed great promise. But tragedy struck...shortly after the third episode of "Phyllis" was in the can, Barbara Colby was murdered in a drive-by shooting incident that remains unsolved to this day. This Columbo vhs offers you the rare chance to view this remarkable woman at work...she is perfect as Lily, all false modesty and big Cheshire Cat grins. Short of that there is the wonderful Jack Cassidy (who had an untimely death himself); and the magnificent Peter Falk as Columbo. P.S. Many people believe that Falk's portrayal of Columbo to be based on Lt.Kinderman, as portrayed by Lee J. Cobb in "The Exorcist"; the author of the novel, William Peter Blatty, certainly thinks so! I must say, I agree that there is a definate simialarity! Check it out! And if you can, check out the first three episodes of "Phyllis"; the series was erratic in quality, but the first three shows are classic television at it's best..it would have been a very different show had Colby survived.

After two successful TV movies, Peter Falk moved his rumpled detective to a regular slot on the "NBC Murder Mystery," which alternated "Columbo" each week with "McCloud," "MacMillan and Wife" and others. Appropriately, the Columbo's first NBC Murder Mystery stars Jack Cassady, one of the series most prolific murderers. This time around, Cassady plays the second half of a writing team, who murders his partner after the latter decides it's time for the team to break up. It's classic Columbo, introducing some of the detective's most famous and ever-present props, including his rumpled raincoat and his unforgettable 1956 Puegot jalopy. Oh . . . and there's just one more thing . . . This is a must for Columbo fans. If you don't buy it for yourself, pick up a copy for the Mrs.

This second season Peter Falk and the Columbo team really came into its own in the Columbo series. The cases are more smoothly developed and Columbo is no longer a member of the "local police", but from LAPD. Columbo is very much like fine wine in that the first season was good and showeed promise as a winner. The second season shows the maturity of the Peter Falk and the team at putting Columbo on screen. This is Columbo worth watching for a nice little mystery solved through a marvelous questioning technique.

I chose Season 2 because I wanted to see a particular Jack Cassidy episode of Columbo. The Amazon listing stated that Jack Cassidy was in this Season 2 DVD set. When it arrived I opened it so I could watch it right away, only to find no listing of my favourite smarmy bad guy. (Jack Cassidy was brilliant at playing that type of character!) I then checked for a listing of Columbo episodes on Wikipedia & found that the one I want is on Season 1. Wish I'd checked Wikipedia first, rather than trusting Amazon--sorry, usually I love Amazon. I can't buy it now because I already splurged on Season 2. I love Columbo & I will enjoy this DVD set, but not nearly as much as I expected to. In the hope that no-one else will be misled this way, I have requested that Amazon remove Mr. Cassidy's name from the Season 2 listing.

This is arguably the best of the Columbo TV mysteries. Columbo takes on veteran bad guy Jack Cassidy in their subtlest game of cat and mouse. Columbo piles on mind game after mind game as Cassidy slowly succumbs to the inevitable. In addition to being one of the earliest Columbo films, this one is directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Steven Bochco. The price alone here makes it worth your while.

I have been a huge Columbo fan for a long time. However, I was disappointed with this second edition. There were fewer episodes than the first edition. Also, when I watch dvd's I look forward to a "special features" section with interviews and behind the scenes footage.
