Having taken home Emmys for outstanding limited drama and lead actor in its '71-'72 debut season, Columbo was again named best drama for its third season ('73-'74). The reason for the repeat success? The formula remained the same: intelligent, engaging scripts and direction, guest performances by top actors, and, of course, Falk at center stage as Columbo, the most unlikely of supersleuths, but unquestionably one of the sharpest (the role would later earn Falk three more Emmys between 1975 and 1990). The 10 episodes compiled in this two-disc set again feature top talent from film and television: directors include veterans Jeannot Swarc and Boris Sagal, as well as actors Nicholas Colasanto (better known as Coach from Cheers) and Ben Gazzara (Falk's frequent co-star in the films of John Cassavetes), while the season's scripts feature contributions from Stephen J. Cannell, Steven Bochco, and Larry Cohen. And in regard to co-stars, Falk matched wits with the likes of Donald Pleasance, Martin Sheen, Vincent Price, Robert Culp (in one of four turns on the series), Jose Ferrer, Ida Lupino, and in two novel but effective casting choices, Johnny Cash and hard-boiled mystery scribe Mickey Spillane. And there's even a bonus feature in the form of an episode of the spinoff series Mrs. Columbo, starring Kate Mulgrew as the Lieutenant's oft-mentioned better half. Great.....But,,

As always, the video quality is very good on this series of DVD's, but where the disappointment begins, is compared with the first 2 series. I did not appreciate the fact that they "cheapened" this box set. They opted for 2 discs rather than 4 like the previous series. They decided to have 2 episodes on each side ( Side A & B ) and they sloted the DVD cases on the wrong side of the Sleeve Box,making it awkward when you place it on your shelf with the others. It does not match. C'mon guys...come back to the old format for the remaining seasons and don't be CHEAP !

I thoroughly enjoyed this set. All the actors put in wonderful performances. One of the best is Jeanette Nolan in Double Shock. Peter Falk as usual is awesome. For me the whole feel of series keeps me watching them over and over. It's wild to see how things looked in the early 70's. The film quality and overall production is awesome. All that is missing are some special features - would be nice to see an interview / biography of Peter Falk. And now - the wait is on for Season 3!

This second season Peter Falk and the Columbo team really came into its own in the Columbo series. The cases are more smoothly developed and Columbo is no longer a member of the "local police", but from LAPD. Columbo is very much like fine wine in that the first season was good and showeed promise as a winner. The second season shows the maturity of the Peter Falk and the team at putting Columbo on screen. This is Columbo worth watching for a nice little mystery solved through a marvelous questioning technique.
