Book Description

Nov. 9 2013

Combat Doctor presents the stories of the victims of the War in Afghanistan, as told by the last Canadian Officer Commanding at the Kandahar Role 3 Multinational Hospital.

In 2009, Marc Dauphin, an experienced emergency-room physician, served a full tour at the combat hospital in Kandahar. During his time there, he dealt with injuries more horrific than he had ever seen during his civilian experience. He and the Role 3 Hospital's international staff saw an unparalleled number of severe casualties and yet maintained a survival rate of 97 percent – a record for all times and all wars.

It is impossible to remain unmoved by Marc Dauphin's descriptions of those he treated: the terrified children, the stoic soldiers, those mutilated almost beyond help. Each story is powerful, vividly told, and unique.

Combat Doctor is a well-told tale of another side of the long war in Afghanistan, a side little known to most Canadians, but one in which Canadians played a prominent and leading part.

5.0 out of 5 stars You have told our story well. Nov. 10 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Captures the atmosphere and emotional charge, keeps the focus on the most important people in the hospital (the patients) and manages to honestly portray what it was about. Thank you for telling our story, and telling it well. This roto was my 3rd time in KAF Role 3 ICU. It was an absolute privilege to work with you, and I would go back in a heartbeat if we could have the same great team. On Monday I shall wear my red poppy, remember you all, and hope that a 4th time will not be required !!

Eye-opening, horrifying, celebratory, distressing, honest. These are some of the words that came to mind when I closed the book for the last time. Readers will cry when they read parts of this book, so have some Kleenex handy.

Combat Doctor is the story of Dr. Marc Dauphin, an ER doc who is also a Canadian Army reservist. He ran the Trauma Centre at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan for six months at the height of the war.

Dauphin's style is edgy — he spares no one the agony of death and injury in a war zone, but it is also an amazing testimony of those who save lives in extreme conditions. It is also celebration of the international staff's dedication and his leadership. Dauphin also tells his tale of PTSD that he suffered on his return to Canada. Illustrated, too, but with photos of the place and people not the blood and gore.

Highly, highly recommended. Everyone should read Combat Doctor, if only to learn the advances made in trauma care that will benefit everyone in the next five years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Book! Highly Recommended! May 28 2014
Format:Paperback
I bought my husband a copy of this book for Christmas at his request. I was eager to read it as well, but thought that it may be difficult. I was right! It wasn't the writing. The book is excellently written. It was the content that was challenging. The stories are gripping. They are full of emotion. They are vivid. I would have been able to picture with my mind all that Marc described so well even without a personal connection.

But my husband was there too and now it has become all the more real to me. So much so, that I could not read the book straight through. I would read a chapter or maybe only part of a chapter and, picturing him there, in that place, in the middle of those stories I would have to pause. I would often put the book down with tears and not pick it up again for several days. I needed to process the intensity of what I was reading. What he and his comrades had lived through.

I highly recommend this book, but I think you can gather that it's not a light read. It's a book full of stories. Stories of men and women working incredibly hard and doing incredible things to save the lives of incredible people at an incredible cost.

Reading it will change you. Living it changed them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and Real Nov. 10 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Combat Doctor is the "raw" account of Dr. Marc Dauphin,a Canadian Medical Officer who was the Commanding Officer of a Role 3 Field Hospital at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan for six months when the war was at it's peak.
Dauphin doesn't "sugar coat" the realities of war. He writes in such a manner that you can almost feel his heart beating as the adrenaline pumps through him while he makes life saving decisions for the mass casualties that show up in his trauma center. There were times that I laughed out loud, times when I had my tissue close at hand, the book captivated me to the end.
Dauphin remains humble about his role as the Commanding Officer all the while giving accolades to the many amazing medical professionals in the multi-national team that he leads.
Thank you for your honest account of what happened during your tour. It is our greatest desire that this book will encourage, educate and advance medical techniques that were used with such success in theater.
Bravo Zulu Marc,
