Product Description

Review

Cheryl Cooper has crafted a novel of epic proportions, incorporating a cast of truly memorable characters. Her meticulous research captures the conditions at sea on a British man-of-war in the early part of the 19th century, and her account of the challenges facing a naval surgeon is particularly engrossing. Written in a flowing, graceful style, Come Looking for Me is a satisfying book that is difficult to put down. A wonderful read!

Come Looking for Me is a fine offering and unexpected romance set amid the fierce naval battles of the United States and Great Britain during the War of 1812. Cheryl Cooper succeeds in creating an intriguing cast of characters and making us care about their ultimate fate. Her extensive research and detailed descriptions of life on the sea add an unyielding realism to a story rich in action and suspense.

A high sea of a good read, roiling with history, cannon blasts, and storms of the heart...I couldn't put it down.

Hours of meticulous research has resulted in a faithful often brutal depiction of life on a British man of war. This story mixes a generous amount of mystery, humor, action, suspense and unexpected romance into a colourful tale of high seas adventure.

Cheryl Cooper has written a masterful story. If you enjoy history and you enjoy fiction - you will very much enjoy "Come Looking For Me." I wasn't able to put it down. It is very evident that Cooper researched the era and has nailed down her facts perfectly.

With "Come Looking for Me" Cheryl Cooper has written a great book with well researched and vivid details of harsh life and battles at sea during the War of 1812. Her character development of many characters in the novel is excellent and with a woman heroine Emily will grab your interest with her mysterious past and her adventures at sea. It is a great page turner and will transport you in imagination back to that era. I highly recommend this book to those who love historical fiction with a dash of mystery and romance.

For a man who does not read much fiction, I found that this was a gripping story that was hard to put it down since every chapter leaves the reader anxious to know what will happen next as it builds up to a climactic confrontation. I found the setting also very interesting and historically significant as we approach the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. This well researched novel gives the reader a vivid word picture of the challenges and perils of our North American ancestors as they battled for control of the vast sea approaches to the New World. I have called it a modern classic since it is written in the style of the old classics such as Mutiny on the Bounty and Tess of the d'Urbervilles. A very enjoyable read, highly recommmended.

Prepare to be engaged from page one. I couldn't put it down. I started reading it around 10 pm one night - thought I'd knock off a few pages, just to get the feel of it.
I told myself at 12:30 I just had to stop reading & get some sleep.
Dreamt about it & started reading again in the middle of the night. Then woke up & started reading again...!
I love the characters, the plot, the writing, the tie into Jane Austen & I can see Jane Austen's style reflected in this book...but combined with a fast moving plot - and the backdrop of period sailing lore - it's fabulous!!
What a ride - I'm happy to finish the book to find out how it all ends, but sad that I'm finished with the joy of reading this page turner! When's the sequel coming out?

In "Come Looking For Me," an historical fiction novel for young adults set on the high seas in the early 19th century, Cheryl Cooper has crafted a strong believable story with an absorbing adventure and characters that vibrate with life. The author's knowledge of the period, her attention to detail, and her ability to capture the voices of her characters all contributed to a great read! The book left me anxious for the next chapter in Emily's saga. There'll be more, won't there?

Great adventure on the sea. Most Canadians know little about the War of 1812 battles that took place on the Atlantic between the Brits and Americans so this is a real eye opener. She weaves a good tale.

A first novel for Cheryl Cooper and she immediately hit her stride. You won't be able to put this down, a fabulous piece of Historical Fiction. You will come to love Emily the young English woman, who's adventure is painted for you in poignant detail; and loath Mrs. Kettle the ships laundress, who pulls out all the stops to try and make Emily's life pure hell. Fortunately for Emily the ship's Doctor Braden, Biscuit the cook, Fly Austen, and other shipmates immediately become her allies.
Cheryl makes you feel as though you are aboard the ship with Emily, truly engaged in her adventure. Book Clubs would have a great discussion around the hardships faced at sea, the courage of the young seamen and how little we know about our own history.
