Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

With producer T-Bone Burnett, whose credits include Bob Dylan and Wallflowers, New York based singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur has made the musical equivalent of the most telling of trips to the psychiatrist's couch. However, the deepest words, most tranquil of acoustic ballads and savage guitar assaults are tempered by the catchiest pop melodies. It's a delicate balance, rarely pulled off as masterfully as on Come To Where I'm From. Lines like "In The Sun"'s "I know I would apologise if I could see your eyes, 'cos when you showed me myself, I became someone else" might allude to a subject without spelling it out in foot high letters, but the aching melodies, haunting vocals and acoustic strains leave no doubt that this is a man searching the darkest corners of his soul. By the sound of "Ashes Everywhere", "Invisible Hands" and "Creation Or A Stain", what he finds on those voyages isn't always easy to deal with, but it's still a touching and beautiful journey. Glorious is the only word that comes close to describing it. --Dan Gennoe

5.0 out of 5 stars the bar room conversation, Aug 24 2002

This review is from: Come To Where I M From (Audio CD)
A sign of a good lyricist is that the listener will "feel a conversation". Well, I hear Joseph Arthur talking, and I'm listening. In "Tattoo", an image of a bar conversation over beer and cigarettes between lost friends comes to mind. He speaks of situations that we all have experienced, and puts them in way that I rarely have heard. He refers to emotional baggage as "in my pain/is where i've tattooed your name/was it a dream?"

This is an album of faith amidst the death of religion from a man looking for joy to grow out of his sorrows. A deep contemplative work with a few hard rock edges are thrown in for good measure. "Exhausted" is a song about a man who thinks too much for his own good, while "History" seems to be about the fruits of that over contemplation.

This album is a great juxtoposition of folk (lyrically driven with acoustic guitar) with the looping techniques of R&B or Techno and a heavy distorted guitar on top to boot. A real find.
