5.0 out of 5 stars four very different yet well written inspiring novellas Oct. 30 2007
By Harriet Klausner - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"Comfort and Joy" by Fern Michaels. Angie and Josh disagree on everything until they face the truth, encouraged by the loving relationship between his father and her mother who have found each other; that they need to look deeper inside each other's heart.

"A High-Kicking Christmas" by Marie Bostwick. Because she broke her foot, Rockettes dancer Kendra agrees to direct a Yuletides play in Maple Grove, Vermont; she never expected to co-star in a personal production with Pastor Andy and his daughter Thea.

"Suzanna's Stockings" by Cathy Lamb. As she lies in a coma, Suzanna's spirit overhears learning things about her family and friends that make her understand what caring truly is.

"Family Blessings" by Deborah J. Wolf. With her mother's mental state rapidly deteriorating from Alzheimer's, Kacey and her family struggle with celebrating Christmas.

Although not entirely upbeat (especially Ms. Wolf's insightful tale) these are four very different yet well written refreshing and inspiring novellas that will have readers thinking what the holiday season means.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming stories Feb. 16 2012
By Mary Ann Anderson - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
"Comfort and Joy" is really four separate books and while I enjoyed all four of the books,"Family Blessings" by Deborah J. Wolf was my favorite. I think another reviewer mentioned that this book was not very upbeat and perhaps it wasn't but it was a very realistic look at the difficulty involved in living with a loved one who has Alzheimers.

My husband of almost 31 years died three years ago with Alzheimers. He was diagnosed some six years before his death and when I read Ms. Wolf's narrative of how the children were trying to talk to their mother (the Alzheimers sufferer) the way the conversation went around and around in circles is identical to the way conversations went between my husband and myself. The frustration family members can experience if they try to "reason" with the victim was also exactly on target and the scary, hopeless feeling that comes over you when you realize your Alzheimer sufferer/loved one has wandered away from home was also something I experienced with my husband.

This book may not have been upbeat but I did not find it to be depressing either and if it did not depress me, after I lost my husband to Alzheimers, I can't think why it would be especially depressing to anyone. Well written and my hat's off to Ms. Wolf!
