Product Description

The world's first handbook of common Japanese collocations

Collocations are word combinations that occur in natural speech more frequently than can be explained by chance. In English, we say "take a bath" (or "have a bath" in British English), but in Japanese the equivalent is "get a bath," o-furo ni hairu. The verb hairu is the one that collocated with o-furo.

It has long been recognized that the study of collocations can lead to more natural language production, and yet until now there has been no book on the subject for learners of Japanese. Common Japanese Collocations will be the first resource to introduce the most frequently used noun-and-verb and noun-and-adjective combinations.

The book is divided into five thematic chapters centering on daily life. Each chapter presents more than a hundred key entries, which consist of a noun and a selection of words that go with that noun. Some collocations come with example sentences that demonstrate how the words pair can be used in a sentence. In addition, throughout the book there are notes on common usage errors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Intermediate Learners!, July 25 2011

This review is from: Common Japanese Collocations: A Learner’s Guide to Frequent Word Pairings (Paperback)
This books is really well organized. It's laid out in sections with titles like "Home" followed by subcategories like "Body & Hygiene", and then organized by noun such as "Bath, Bathtub", with all common phrases related to the bathtub listed below. The sections range from "Daily Life" to "Entertainment" and include such unusual topics as "the Dentist & Optometrist" to "Karaoke" and "Fashion". If you need a phrase, you can find it here.

I titled this review as ideal for intermediate learners because there is no romanized spelling (romanji) within. This book is more for vocabulary building and encouraging the naturalness of speech rather than a mere phrasebook. Fear not, kanji-impaired: the hiragana is always present!

Another nice feature of this book is the inclusion of example sentences, rather like a good dictionary. For instance, you are given the phrase "carry an umbrella", and then an example sentence of "the weather report says it will rain this evening, so take your umbrella with you".

All in all, a great addition to any intermediate learner's library.

This is a pretty good book for the most part. It gives lots of words for different situations and shows their common connections. I just wish there was more example sentences as well as an index for what pages the words are on. The words are still easy to find given the situations of Home, Daily life, People, School & Work, Travel and Entertainment in the contents. Overall I would recommend this book to any one who can read hiragana and katakana the formatting is much nicer than the authors other titles and you can just flip through any section when your board since there is no structure to follow.

Book is very helpful in displaying the information needed on how common phrases should be worded in Japanese. The sections are well thought out. I use this as a reference many times through studying and to help translate.

Any student of Japanese, at some point, struggles with the order of things. This book helps, giving common word pairings, and giving example sentences. I haven't had the chance to test this out in Japan yet, but I think I'm more confident than I would be otherwise.
