4.0 out of 5 stars Good for FAST Field Identification, Nov 14 2009
By Richard R. Powell - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Common Mushrooms of the Northwest: Alaska, Western Canada & the Northwestern United States (Paperback)
This slim book (95 pages) is perfect for beginners who want to identify mushrooms in the Northwest. I live on Vancouver Island and have read each page several times. I have seen over half of the mushrooms identified, and have not, so far, found any that were not in this guide, so for Vancouver Island at least, the common mushrooms seem to be in here.

Most of the mushrooms take up 1/2 a page, each with an excellent picture and succinct description. The big name fungi (Matsutake,Prince, Meadow Mushroom, Shaggy Mane, Fly Amanita, etc.)have a whole page with more text, or two photos.

What I like about this book is that the limited number of mushrooms pictured, and the fact that there are not likely to be any mushrooms on the ground that are not in the book, makes identification faster. A whole lot of mushrooms have been sorted out so I don't get discouraged reading multiple descriptions for mushrooms that don't even grow here. Some may warn that this way of trusting one book could lead me astray, and that is fair enough. I'm not saying this is the only book you need, especially if you are thinking about eating what you identify, but it is an efficient, and so far comprehensive, filter for field identification.

I am interested in gathering mushrooms for the table, and have taken a couple of workshops on mushroom identification, so I recognize that this one book is not detailed enough to be reliable in all cases, especially once you get past the easy to identify mushrooms like Hedgehogs and Puffballs. Still, it is pretty good for what it is and has kept me going without overwhelming me.

I think one of the best features is the photos. Sept is a professional photographer, and it shows. A good picture is a huge help, and this book has exceptional photos, reproduced well.

There are, of course, limitations to a book this size. For example, the Violet Cortinarius and the Lilac Conifer Cortinarius have very similar descriptions, yet one is edible while the other is possibly poisonous. A look-alike comment, and some way to distinguish them, would be nice, but, again, this is a slim volume with a limited scope.

Bottom line: a great book to have in your backpack for fast field identification of common species in the northwest.

I bought this book for my neighbor who is a mushroom hunter... he liked it. It helped identify some that were growing in our yards that we couldn't find in other books. Really nice reference book!! I checked out a bunch at the library, and this was my favorite.

Decent book with lots of large colored photos, the coloring is a little off on some mushrooms.
