Product Description

Community hits an ingenious balance: it's both a top-notch sitcom about a gaggle of misfits at a community college and a satire on the very nature of sitcoms. Jeff (Joel McHale of The Soup), a fast-talking suspended lawyer seeking an authentic undergraduate degree, forms a Spanish study group for the sole purpose of wooing Britta (Gillian Jacobs, Choke), a former political activist trying to move into mainstream life--but to his dismay a handful of other students show up as well. As happens in sitcoms, they turn into an alternate family, including Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), a Christian housewife; Abed (Danny Pudi), a business/film student with Asperger's syndrome; Troy (Donald Glover), a former high school football star; Annie (Alison Brie, Mad Men), an overachieving ex-drug addict; and a former moist-towelette magnate (Chevy Chase, Saturday Night Live, Foul Play). Community's plots occasionally revolve around classes--most often abusive assignments from their volatile Spanish teacher, Señor Chang (Ken Jeong, The Hangover)--but more often the show veers into daffy social territory, such as female bathroom etiquette, excessive political correctness, sexually transmitted disease prevention, the true meaning of Christmas, bullies, and teacher-student affairs. The characters are delightful, the dialogue swift and clever, and the stories skillfully orchestrated.

But the secret pleasure of Community is its sneaky commentary on sitcom mechanics, from the whole concept of an alternate family to the manipulative nature of will-they-won't-they sexual tension to any number of subtle but affectionate digs. The show's pop-culture awareness extends even further in two of the best episodes, one that turns a craving for chicken fingers into a GoodFellas-esque Mafia tale and another about a paintball competition that escalates into a quasi-apocalyptic action thriller. Also, Community: The Complete First Season is packed with delicious extras--in addition to cheerful and entertaining commentaries (which demonstrate how much the cast enjoys working together) and the usual outtakes of the cast breaking character, there are excellent mini-episodes, mock cast interviews, and some very creative use of sound effects. Fans of Arrested Development will enjoy the rich, layered humor and fans of How I Met Your Mother will take similar pleasure in the clever stories, but Community should appeal to anyone seeking smart, high-energy comedy. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome TV show Oct. 13 2010
By Matt W
I've been a fan of Community since I saw a clip on a talk show when Gillian Jacobs was being interviewed. At that point about 6 episodes had already aired and I quickly jumped on the show. I love it! It's hilarious and one of the funniest and most sophisticated sitcoms on TV right now. A lot of comparisons have been made to Arrested Development and I wouldn't say that's the most accurate comparison. They are both very witty and rely on clever writing and character development for the stories as opposed to cheap sight gags or archetypal sitcom staples (the fat dad, lovable dimwit, etc). Community is not shot mockumentary style though - I feel this is getting over done anyway with The Office, Parks & Rec, and Modern Family doing this style. Where this show really excels is in its pop culture references. As you'll learn from watching the commentaries, the creator, Dan Harmon, wanted to present a show where the characters live in the same world we do and would watch, listen, and read the same things we would. It creates a very contemporary and refreshing show but it also does a nice job of dropping references that set the age of the characters apart.

The DVD comes with all 25 episodes and four compilations of outtakes, one on each of the four discs. There is also a end of the season review skit done with Dan and the actors. There are commentaries for each episode and one or two extended episodes. I watched all the commentaries and they were insightful and sometimes pretty funny, but I don't think I'd ever watch them again. I do find that time after time, when I've got a short break or lunch, it's always worthwhile to throw in a disc and rewatch one of the great 25 episodes. It's a really great show and I'm looking forward to the next season (currently airing).

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for any real fan Feb. 26 2012
By Jon C.
We all know that you can watch episodes illegally online, but anyone who is a true fan of the show MUST buy these DVDs. They have so many extra features that they are worth it just to see the outtakes, special featurettes, and commentary on EVERY SINGLE EPISODE.

The show itself is brilliant and hilarious.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Community...it's addictive like crack" Jan. 21 2011
You know how when you buy a dvd and then a few months later it's significantly cheaper and you get annoyed because if you had just waited, you could have saved a few bucks? I bought Season 1 of Community for $35, it's now selling on amazon for $20. And...don't care. Love love love this show. Totally worth it.
Normally its hard to get others into a show, or takes too much effort. But I've gotten so many of my friends and a few casual acquaintances into Community. The most recent thanked me for the season 1 dvd loan with the title quote. And I'm not just a pusher, I'm a user too: I've probably watched every episode at least a half dozen times and enjoy it every time. It's comfort food. It's crack. It's the best show on tv.
And the s1 dvd with all the extras is great. There's outtakes/blooper reels on every disc, which on their own is worth the $20 or $35 or whatever its selling for.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+ for Community Season 1 March 5 2011
This is a fantastic show. I laugh out loud at some point during every episode, and all of the characters bring something to the table. I used to like shows like Big Bang Theory and Chuck, but honestly they've got nothin' on Community. Do yourself a favor and check this one out. Vastly under appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the rest March 2 2011
Community is one of those game-changing sitcoms that goes beyond the genre and really delivers a top-notch product, making the best use of its seven main characters (and several recurring stars) to talk about college life in a semi-realistic yet completely entertaining way. The show discards formula in favour of providing new and fresh scenarios in each episode, and the popular culture references that are made do not feel forced at all.

I'm sad that this series is cancelled but glad that it's on dvd. Great ensemble cast, great writing, great comedy, I love watching this series over and over and love the characters! I love seeing the relationships develop and how the dynamics interact and how the characters change and grow.

I'd recommend this to Community fans and comedy fans in general, the humour goes from subtle to kind of broad. The actors are so talented and love love love the outtakes in the Special Features.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Rash and Paint Ball Feb. 28 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is the story of a suspended lawyer who accidentally creates a study group trying to "date" a girl at a community college. It's clever, witty, entertaining and nostalgic and there is a paintball episode that makes all the chaos worthwhile. As the seasons come and go, though, you realize that the only thing you're really getting out of it is Jim Rash in your life, and that is worth 5 stars all by itself.
