Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

A 43-year-old Ella rolls through her typical routine in feisty fashion on this 1960 recording, which documents the opening show of her European tour. There's the Satchmo impersonation (a joyous "Mack the Knife"), the lengthy scat showcase ("How High the Moon", on which she quotes Charlie Parker's "Ornithology") and a bevy of Gershwin and Porter tunes. Supported by pianist Paul Smith's quartet (with the elegant Jim Hall on guitar), Ella's voice sounds earthier than usual and her phrasing is as appealing as ever. She's sublimely tender on "Misty" and wonderfully sultry on "Too Darn Hot". The CD reissue includes two unreleased tracks from the Berlin concert plus two 1956 gems (including a stylish "Love for Sale") that were mistakenly pressed on this release. Upon its initial release, the album picked up two Grammies; its acclaim was well deserved. --Marc Greilsamer

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done live jazz album, May 28 2004
This review is from: Comp Ella In Berlin Mack The (Audio CD)
Ella is one of the greatest jazz female vocalists, and her live performance with an excellent jazz rhythm section (piano, bass, drums, guitar), is the reason you should buy this album, especially if you like jazz music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most amazing Mack The Knife version ever, Mar 13 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Comp Ella In Berlin Mack The (Audio CD)
This is a must-have Ella record. All of it is very good, but the version of "Mack The Knife" is staggering. Ella is performing this new tune live in Berlin, the home town of authors Kurt Weill and Bertholt Brecht while Bobby Darin and Louis Armstrong were charting wtih very popular versions of their own. It's a true testament to her talent as an entertainer that she won the Grammy (not Bobby or Louis) for a version WHERE SHE FORGOT MOST OF THE WORDS and improvised brilliantly! Truly one of the most remarkable vocal performances ever to win a Grammy.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE VERY, VERY BEST OF ELLA FITZGERALD, Sep 6 2002
This review is from: Comp Ella In Berlin Mack The (Audio CD)
An absolutely incredible album. Arguably the best Ella Fitzgerald CD, definitely the best live concert. In all my 71 Ella Fitzgerald CDs, I've only heard about 5 or 6 songs that rank higher on my list than "How High The Moon", "Mack the Knife", or "Summertime".
What makes this recording truly stand out is Ella's consistency. She is vocally at the peak of her powers, and each of the songs she sings here is the best Ella version that exists. This is true not only of the title and HHtM, but of The Man I Love, Too Darn Hot, The Lady is a Tramp, and especially Lorelei. These songs are also available on her studio Songbook Series, but in this live context Ella brings out the interpretation more honestly. Although her songbooks are excellent and define dozens of standards, it is obvious that in concert, Ella was choosing the songs most suited to her approach. If you take one CD on a desert island, make it this one!

P.S. E-mail me if interested in my top 10 Ella tracks (which may vary as I continue to collect!)
