This is a good resource for passing both CompTIA A+ certification exams. It covers roughly 90% of what you need to know for the exams but also assumes you have a technical background to back up the content. This is a book designed around the tests and doesn't spend to much time explaining the technology behind the answers (which is fine, it's "ExamCram" for a reason.) I'd recommend one of the other more comprehensive books if you need more background information. The practice tests are very useful as is the software and electronic versions of the resources on the included CD.

Be forewarned that the book does miss some of what's needed in the exam and fails to mention anything about the new performance-based tests (aka simulations) in the 220-801 and 220-802 exams. Be sure to look at other resources available on the Internet in support of your studying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Nov. 27 2012

This can remind candidates who have much enough experience in A+ related knowledge.
Better if it could include some information about the new simulate questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars From an A+ Instructor Aug. 28 2012
By Robert A. Fornal - Published on
As a long-time A+ Instructor (18+ years), the CompTIA A+ 220-801 and 220-802 Authorized Exam Cram series is one that I have recommended to every student I have ever had, regardless of the book(s) we used for our classes. For all my students, I can honestly say that this series is worth every penny. When I personally prepared for the A+ exams myself, I used this series exclusively and missed one question total (on both tests). I firmly believe in this series and what it can do for the student looking to pass the A+ exams.

This book is not just a fine example of a new edition with all the new content added in, it is a significant improvement. The book is written in a much clearer format than any of the previous editions; it is a readable document, not a technical manual.

The questions and answer format follows everything I have learned to expect from the series. The book provides, not just questions and answers, but the logic behind the right and wrong answers giving the student reading it solid information to add the their knowledge and experience.

For the student that has a solid foundation in the IT industry, this book should be all you need. For those that are new to the industry, this book is a solid supplement to whatever learning track you choose to take.

This series will have a place on my bookshelf for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great A+ Preparation Tool Feb. 5 2013
By Thomas Gustafson - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've been teaching A+ and other topics for 14 years and I've taken over 25 certification exams, so I know what good materials look like. The Exam Cram A+ for 801/802 is an outstanding resource, and if you have some computer background it may be the only resource you'll need to do very well on the exams.

I used this book as my primary resource (I passed the exams very comfortably) and found it to be the right amount of detail. Some books are way too detailed and you get lost in the forest of information. Others don't cover crucial topics. I think Mr. Prowse has found the right balance.

The sample test questions throughout the book and the two sample exams at the end are a great assessment tool and are similar in scope to the real exam questions. There is a very handy "cheat sheet" review card in the front of the book which is a great review tool after you have done your studying.

I will be recommending this resource wholeheartedly to my students by all means!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Exam Guide/ Great Resource Oct. 3 2012
By L. A. Vachon - Published on
Despite its title, the A+ Exam Cram, sixth edition written by David L. Prowse and published by Pearson, lies somewhere between a "cram book" and a fuller, richer guide for those seeking to prepare for the A+ 220-801 and 220-802 exams. For those relatively new to the IT field, the book covers all of the CompTIA exam objectives; each chapter opens with an outline of the exam topics covered as well as the specific objectives (download CompTia's exam objective guide from their website, [...]). For those who have IT experience, the book is designed so chapters are independent; focus on those chapters in which you need a refresher or use it as a quick reference for basic information.

Those new to the IT field may be tempted to jump to chapter one and forego the introduction. I caution against that because the author charts certification roadmaps, discusses chapter format and introduces you to graphical alerts that help you hone in on important tips. Although the book covers well the sheer breadth of the CompTIA exam topics, it is not a replacement for more detailed texts that take you more deeply into the workings of PC hardware and operating systems as well as newer technologies such as mobile devices and tablets.

As a "cram" text, you'll find that the book over-delivers on what it promises. Each chapter provides succinct and fairly detailed information on the topic and the author often cites additional resources such as Microsoft Technet, user groups as well as his own website. Take advantage of outside resources to expand your knowledgebase and gain an understanding of the kinds of issues others face in the field (e.g., troubleshooting device issues, common errors, workarounds, etc.). Each topic within a chapter closes with a quiz so you have an immediate checkpoint to ensure that you are retaining what you read.
Keep in mind that even the most detailed explanation of a topic is no match for hands-on experience. Prowse is quick to note that it's vital to work with hardware and run an operating system through its paces - look for a computer in classifieds or a second-hand shop that you can use to tear down, re-build, inspect, install an operating system, break and troubleshoot. Studying the text in conjunction with hands-on experience will help you grasp the information and develop your confidence.

One of the best features of the A+ Exam Cram, to my mind, is the sheer number of exam questions delivered via an electronic test engine (included on the CD). I had no problems installing the test engine and activating the test. Once activated the exam downloads and you can select to focus on questions linked to specific chapters, work in study mode or practice exam mode, order the test by objective, randomize questions or select to view only those questions you marked for review after a first pass. Pearson provides you with hundreds of exam questions in a convenient digital format. Beyond this, there are 100 questions for each test at the back of the book. Whether concentrating on the practice exams in the book or from the test engine you'll receive detailed explanations for each answer.

As a final note, there's a tear out in the front of the book that focuses on many of the nitty-gritty details that simply have to be memorized such as the maximum data speed of USB 2.0 or some of the popular networking protocols and their port numbers.

If you work through each chapter, take all of the quizzes and practice exams to recognize areas of strength and weakness, and practice on a test machine you'll be well-prepared for CompTiA's certification exam. Keep this guide close; you'll refer to it often even after you're A+ certified.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book for Comp/TIA A+ 220-801/220-802 exams is a very good study book Aug. 24 2012
By Boomer - Published on
This new book for the Comp/TIA A+ 220-801/220-802 exams is a very good A+ study book, and one of the firsts for the new exams. I like how the chapters are broken into segments with a few questions right after a topic is covered, instead of a whole bunch of questions at the end of the chapter. This is especially helpful with the longer chapters. The cram sheet at the front of the book is still one of the things that really make the exam cram books stand out, and I found it to be very useful. The paper exams are in the back of the book are thorough, and I like how the answer key provides the chapter that the question comes from to help you review wrong answers (though I would have liked for the book to provide page numbers instead of just chapters). The CD in the back of the book really has some very nice study tools including a PDF file of all of the Exam Alerts from the book. Also the authors of the book assume that you have a fair knowledge of the subject matter, so if you are completely knew to computer support this may not be the book for you. Overall this is a very nice book that should help anyone with some computer support background be able to pass the Comp/TIA A+ 220-801/220-802 exams.
