Great Resource, Mar 28 2010

I was looking for a book that would explain, in a non-technical way, how I as a small business owner can research and stay ahead of my competition. This book was perfect for me, because it takes complicated subjects (I don't have a business degree) and presents them in easy to follow plain language.
I had no idea that I can do my own focus groups and market surveys for free, or just how much intelligence I can get from the 'hidden" Internet. The exercises that come with the chapters are really useful and fun. Things like practising what you can see in reflected surfaces like windows in order to hone your observation skills were really eye opening!
The author, Rob Duncan, is obviously an expert in this field, but he has that rare gift of understanding what a business owner needs to know, and getting his ideas across in a clear fashion without talking down to the reader. I recommend this book as an excellent value!

Competitive Intelligence - The Effective Way, May 2 2010

If you are looking for a 250-pages bible of Competitive Intelligence (CI), this is not the book for you.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a book that explains the core concepts and guides you through setting up a competitive intelligence system for your business/company, you may find yourself wondering the many ways you can start using the information within.
Competitive Intelligence focuses on the external environment and how to convert data from different sources into a decision making system.
The author takes all the jargon and non-sense out of the book and focuses in how to use competitive intelligence in your business in a cheap, practical and ethical way. In other words, how to be effective.
After having attended many classes in CI, this book helps to capture the most reelevant that information into a single source that you can refer back to.
Excellent for: small/medium business owners, entrepreneur,

Nothing of value, Nov 27 2009

I bought this book in hopes of getting some insights on how to perform competitive intelligence; instead, i just get general overview and basic exercises. There are better articles on the web about competitive intelligence then what is in this book. If you want a good book on competitive intelligence, I recommend Competitive Intelligence Advantage by Seena Sharp.
