5.0 out of 5 stars Another Clear Winner from Amy Shojai, Aug 21 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Care For Your Aging Dog (Mass Market Paperback)
This book covers a topic that deeply frightens many dog owners. The inevitable aging process that occurs all too rapidly can be terrifying, particularly if you've never had a geriatric canine before, but knowing what to expect can help you down this path. The first half of this new paperback discusses how dogs age ("Defining 'Old'"), L.O.V.E. for health (Listen with your heart, Observe for changes, Visit the vet, enrich the environment), nursing care, advanced care options, and making choices about euthanasia. The second half covers diseases that are common to seniors, such as glaucoma, kidney disease, heart failure, senility, urinary incontinence, and so on. Shojai has some really impressive source veterinarians, good contacts from her years of writing about veterinary medicine. There are some intentional throat-catching moments, sidebars called Golden Moments, about people and their dogs such as Gina Spadafori and her senior sheltie, Andy. The medical parts are well explained with clear quotations from veterinarians, who we all know can be a little confusing sometimes. Good job, Amy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for the Dog Lover, Aug 4 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Complete Care For Your Aging Dog (Mass Market Paperback)
Amy Shojai's _Complete Care for Your Aging Dog_ is a fabulous book for all dog lovers. Not only is it a must-have reference -- meticulously researched, easy to navigate, excellent examples -- but it is filled with heart and soul and love, mirroring all the best characteristics of our beloved companion canines. This is a book written by someone who obviously *cares* about dogs and the people who share their lives with them; even if your dog is still young you'll benefit by reading it. Ms. Shojai demystifies the aging process and her L.O.V.E. program for health validates and puts into practical terms the intuitive sense we often have that something is just "not right" with our companion. Throughout the book, Ms. Shojai emphasizes partnering with your dog's veterinarian to help your dog realize optimum health and longevity. I can't recommend it highly enough!
