Following the comprehensive style of 2000`s bestselling Official Body Control Pilates Manual (which has sold 150,000 copies in the UK alone), this dynamic programme for the intermediate and advanced Pilates devotee heralds a return to Joseph Pilates` classical matwork (which was originally devised for fitter-than-average people, eg. dancers and athletes). The 34 exercises are physically demanding but presented as ever in layman`s language, with watchpoints, warnings and detailed advice on the timing of the breath, so crucial to the core stability that Pilates is famed for building. Preparation exercises ensure that you are ready to tackle the full action.

The exercises culminate in fluent workout programmes to maintain and challenge your level of fitness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only good way to learn Pilates on your own April 13 2007
By vintner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
After buying all the other Pilates books, I finally found this one: this is the book you want. It includes particularly clear photos and descriptions of every exercise, sufficient to actually learn them. It includes ultra-precise directions for the crucial details (that are glossed over in other books which tell you that you can only learn everything by taking a dozen $90/hr lessons from a local studio). It includes all and only the mat exercises, so you don't need any equipment--at all. The exercises and sequence really are extremely faithful to Joseph Pilates's own illustrated book of 50 years ago A Pilates' Primer : The Millennium Edition, but the photos and detailed descriptions in this new book are infinitely superior; many other "Pilates" books (and even more the DVDs) introduce a lot of idiosyncratic variations. Particularly notable is an added series of "warm-up" exercises which can be a boot-strap to gain the initial strength needed for the beginner's exercises, and those in turn lead to intermediate and advanced forms which can be very challenging. The extreme attention to detail in the hundreds of photos and meticulous descriptions is combined with very clear presentation and arrangement. This is the book to begin with, and it's really the only one you'll need.
