5.0 out of 5 stars Good resource for the new or the experienced. Aug 30 2010

As an upholstery student, I am always looking for new resources. Had checked this book out of library and took it to class to show my teacher. She has been doing upholstery for over 40 years and she was impressed with the book. There were some techniques that were new to her. I ordered two books, one for me and a copy for my teacher. She now recommends this book to her students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good resource for the upholstery novice... July 20 2011
By James M. Coffey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have found it difficult to find a solid resource for upholstery - this one comes the closest. The photographs are clear and close-up and the text is well-written and precise. The author goes over all the tools needed for most upholstery work. The section on tools is followed by a section of fabrics and trims. A tool list and supply list is provided with each task - starting at the beginning (stripping) and right up to the finished project. Clear diagrams are provided for webbing and spring patterns although the upholster's knot is not clear. Although the book uses pictures of straw and horsehair, one can still use the techniques shown with foam and cotton - the van-dyking section is one of the best I have seen. The single and double welt section - followed by making a box cushion can be used to make any cushion and is something I have not seen as well presented as in this book. I will use this as a reference in addition to the class in upholstery I am taking - it does NOT replace the class itself...so far no upholstery book I have looked at could do that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not "complete". Not for beginners. May 16 2011
By Oliphaunt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't know why my reviews are always mixed but there 'ya go.
Mostly this book is about very, very traditional upholstery, i.e. horse hair stuffing, etc. This is, without doubt, the very best way to do it. Today, however, most upholstery is done with foam. Foam is much easier and, although it doesn't have the permanence of traditional methods, it will probably be the 1st choice of almost all beginners - and, unfortunately, most professionals, these days.
This book simply does not discuss the use of foam at all except to mention, now and again, that it's what most so-called people use today. (Ugh!) Therefore, the book is neither "complete" nor very useful to many just starting out. I imagine there are probably very good complete books out there. This just isn't one of them.
Having said that, it is quite good in describing basic traditional methods. (It does not address some common situations very well at all, though. Too many pretty pictures ... not enough info.)

P.S. Amazon doesn't carry quality horse hair. I looked.
