Product Description

From Amazon

Sun recently changed the Java certification exam, adding questions on a lot of new material. As such, the original version of this book just won't cut it. Among the many updates, the authors have added a 50-question exam, 150 questions on the CD, more coverage of the developer's exam and a reference section on the certification alliance.

Basically, Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide is for those who already know Java but want the kind of proof that brings in the big bucks. You want Sun itself to vouch for your competence next time you walk into an interview.

The bulk of the text is pedantic description of every aspect of the Java language. It describes Java in complete and mind-numbing detail because, in the exam, you can be asked anything about it. The authors test your dedication to passing the exam by doing their best to put you to sleep. Those remaining awake at the end of each chapter get a test on its content. These take the same form as they will in the actual exam, mostly multi-choice questions based on Java code fragments, though more than one answer can be correct. Of course, the real exam is on-screen.

Crossword fanatics solve crosswords set by familiar authors faster, having learned how their minds work, so it is worth noting that Simon Roberts headed up the team that wrote the Java Certification exam. It seems likely, therefore, that if you can handle the questions set here you will do well in the real exam. No other Java certification guide can make the same claim. Buy it, study it and pass. --Steve Patient

Book Description

Welcome to the completely revised edition of the market-leading Java exam preparation guide from Sybex! Authors Simon Roberts (the lead author of the Java exams), Philip Heller, and Michael Ernest have completely revamped their book, writing five new chapters on the tough Developer's exam and adding lots of new questions (200 new ones in the book and on the CD). In response to reader feedback, we've cut out the long API reference that was in the previous edition and replaced it with more meaningful content. Finally, the CD now contains a fully searchable electronic edition of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Just For Sun Certified Java Developer Exam, May 21 2004

This review is from: Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book will get the job done if you're using it to pass the SCJP exam. However, it is not at all helpful when it comes to the SCJD assignment. The book gets way too advanced when it comes to the SCJD part. It glosses over topics like distributed event notification, and creating a thread pooling mechanism. These things are not necessary for the exam at all and the book's explanations are way too generalized to help you understand them anyway. I found the book's style to be too formal and much less readable than the book by Kathy Sierra. If you're just taking the SCJP test, this book will work for you. But, if you're going for the SCJD, I recommend "The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam With J2SE 1.4." This latter book goes into way more detail and is much more helpful for SCJD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad choice for success, May 5 2004

I passed these exams a few months ago and as I now look back and see my continually growing library of IT books and certification guides, the Sybex books simply stand out from the others.

The book is pretty much on the mark for what the exams test. Having now completed my MCSE, Java, OCA and Linux++ certifications, I can honestly say that a combination of the Sybex guides and Self Test Software test exams will get you a pass mark in any of these certifications.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review questions are far too easy, Mar 25 2004
By
I haven't sit for the test yet and I'm not confident enough after reading just this one book. I got all the review question at the end of each chapter right and it was a major dissapointmet when I found myself unable to answer many of the questions on the mock exams. I've done many othe mock exams on the net getting just around 70%, so I decided I need another book. This book might be good just for getting an initiall preparation for the exam but it defently lacks deph on details must likely to come up in the real thing.
