to save suspense- not as good as vol. 1, Mar 17 2004

i don't think that this collection can hold a candle to 'complete works vol. 1.' i may be a bit biased though, as i'd never heard 'feel so sad' before i owned it. the 'ladies and gentlemen...' b-sides are kind of weak. it's fascinating to hear how much work jason pierce put into getting 'broken heart' where it is on the album. it's also kind of fascinating to hear 'stay with me' bleed into 'the individual' even though it works better with 'home of the brave.' but for god's sake can we please stop it with the 'lay back in the sun' alternate versions?! that said disc two is much better and puts a better spin on the 'let it come down' songs. the live versions are quite nice, there is even evidence of where a few tracks from 'amazing grace' originated ('the power and the glory' can be heard in the intro to the live version of 'on fire' and 'hold on's main parts can be heard in 'amazing grace'). 'going down slow' is a nice completely new track. 'rock and roll' is... well, you can tell why he left it off the album...

Spiritualized - 'Complete Works 2' (Arista), Feb 5 2011

Total of twenty-six tracks, nifty assembled 2-CD box set (if you want to call it that). Actually, most box sets imply a thick booklet inside. This is, in reality your typical 2-CD release - no matter. Has plenty of single and instrumental edits of past Spiritualized songs. Every bit as good as their 'Complete Works 1' 2-CD title (see my review). While I've never been the biggest Spaceman 3 / Spiritualized fan out there - I do listen to a CD of theirs from time to time. Wouldn't mind catching them out on tour again. Glad to hear that Jason Pierce is now doing better - hear we almost lost him to a nasty case of pneumonia. Long live Spiritualized.

Two Words:
Exquisitely Beautiful.
True Story:
Since thirteen years young I've scoured the Earth for beautiful music. Of the thousands of songs that I've listened to, I consider twenty of them to be exceptionally beautiful. This compilation contains four of the twenty.
Star Rating:
Six Stars. Very few albums are comparable to this one.
