Product Description

From AudioFile

Roger White's discourse exists so far on the fringe of common knowledge that perhaps only a dozen people might understand it--and 11 of them could be lying. It talks of a conceptual revolution having its roots in four separate domains: fractals, chaos, self-organization, and emergent computation. Edwin Newman's calm narration handles the complex jargon with ease, and he sounds like he understands difficult concepts like the laws of thermodynamics. For the quotes by the brainy thinkers who wrote them, other narrators, using phony, contrived accents, speak on cue. Because the quotes contain such obscure terminology, the fake accents being attempted render many of the English words unintelligible. 2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow the foreign accents, Jun 23 2008
By Craig G - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Complexity and Chaos (Audio CD)
This is an audio book I wish I could find the paper version of instead of the other way around. Very interesting but incredibly hard to follow at least for me since the author references many of the people who discovered chaos theory. When the person is referenced the voice changes to the an imitation of that person. Mandlebrot is almost impossible to understand with the heavy French accent. Same with the German mathematicians. Even the English researchers were difficult to follow with their hard British accent. Why did they think was necessary to do? This is a book on math and science, not a dramatic story, the listener doesn't need to feel that hearing Mandlebrot explain his concepts will make it any better. It makes it worse!
