HASH(0x9f2efdf8) out of 5 stars Glorious singing of Beethoven's masterpiece Aug. 3 2008

This is a superb production in every way. The orchestra, conductor (Mariss Jansons), soloists, and chorus are excellent. The sound is quite good considering the limitations of the acoustics in the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.
Beethoven's 9th Symphony was performed in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI who addressed the audience at the conclusion of the concert.
A wonderful addition to the program is the motet Tu Es Petrus (You are Peter) by Palestrina - a beautiful piece honoring the Pope as the successor to the Apostle Peter.
Buy this DVD and be thrilled with a lovely performance.

A magnificent, heartfelt and faith-filled performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Be sure to watch the post-concert remarks of Pope Benedict XVI who offers a profound and inspiring interpretation of the composer's "dark night of the soul" and of the personal transformation that resulted in this monumental work.

An artistic event of the highest importance took place at the Paul VI Audience Hall at the Vatican, on October 27, 2007: The Symphonieorchester und Chor das Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted by Mariss Jansons, performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI. Preceding the Beethoven was a magnificent performance of Palestrina's motet, "Tu es Petrus," set to the most important of the Petrine Texts.

The performance of the Ninth is electrifying and overwhelming, and the Bavarian-born Pontiff, an intellectual and spiritual beacon in today's dark world, was clearly moved; his Address following the concert was most eloquent.

The distinguished soloists in the Beethoven were Kammersängerin Krassimira Stoyanova, Lioba Braun, Michael Schade, and Michael Volle.

Also on this DVD is the fascinating documentary by Barbara Schepanek and Ralph Gladitz, "Götterfunken für den Papst" (Divine Spark for the Pope), regarding the preparations for this important event, including following Bavarian pilgrims who traveled from Germany to attend the concert. One particular farmer is touching in his heartfelt simplicity during his first visit to the Holy City.

In all, an extraordinary achievement, worthy even of this great Vicar of Christ.
