Wonderful Elgar !, Nov 17 2010
By AndyC "AndyC" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Concerto Violin/Poeme (Audio CD)
I have owned the famed Nigel Kennedy version of Elgar's violin concerto for years and despite numerous listenings I've never been able to get into it - and never understood it's renown.
Searching for an alternate, I came across this Philippe Graffin, RLPO/Handley version on Amazon UK and was intrigued that they used the "original" Elgar manuscript rather than the version annotated (apparently not always to the composer's liking) by Fritz Kreisler. And I'm always a sucker for the RLPO having grown up in Liverpool. So we hit the "Proceed To Checkout" button.
No disappointment here ! This version is a revelation. It's involving, Philippe Graffin'e tone and phrasing shine a warm light on this wonderful music and draw you in. The 2nd movement is just a joy. The RLPO with Vernon Handley are right there, providing just the right support and the audio of this 2005 recording in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall is demonstration quality.
Chausson's Poème was a new to me; it's a lovely complement to the Elgar.
Lastly, a bouquet to Avie Records for some of the best sleeve notes I've ever seen, including the complete text of a talk given by violinist William Reed in the interval of a 1937 performance in which he describes working with Elgar on the concerto several decades earlier.
Strongly recommended.
