This book is titled in Europe as "The Spanish Civil War, Reaction, Revolution & Revenge." Preston has written extensively and authoratively on modern Spain. The Spanish Civil War was as much political as a war fought on the battlefield. Preston defines the principals, the politics, the strategies and mistakes, the defeats and triumphs and the overwhelming tragedy of this war. The English writings on this war are fortunately extensive and from what I can tell well written. Anthony Beevor has a new reprint of his earlier book on the Spanish Civil War which relies in large measure of Preston's three books on this era. A worthy endorsement one might conclude. Preston's biographies of Franco and Juan Carlos, carry on his valuable contribution to modern Spanish history.
