Gr 7-10-Each book profiles 10 leaders ranging from the very famous (Ulysses S. Grant and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson) to the almost unknown (Henry Wager Halleck and William Joseph Hardee). The biographical sketches all share the same format, containing an overview of the general's early life and prewar career, information about his war service, and an analysis of his legacy. Each nine-page entry features a full-page black-and-white portrait and some also include average-quality photographs of war scenes. Green and Sanford are objective about their subjects, describing each man's personal and professional strengths and weaknesses. Although these sketches provide a limited amount of information, they allow readers to see how these leaders performed over time. Many titles about the Civil War mention these men only in relation to specific battles. The two books have identical introductions, charts, maps and glossaries. Neither, however, has a bibliography or list for further reading. Most libraries already own biographies of Grant and Lee, and the multivolume The American Civil War (Grolier, 1994) covers all of these individuals. However, these books provide readable, easy-to-use material and are good additional choices.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
