Product Description

“Trauma therapist Mary K. Armstrong embarks on an illuminating journey into her own secret past and emerges with a renewed sense of personal authenticity and joy in helping others.”
—SYLVIA FRASER, author of My Father’s House: A Memoir of Incest and Healing

“A brilliant, heartbreaking, and inspiring account of a child's tragedy and a woman's persistent growth toward light, knowledge, truth, and strength. Never has the human spirit shone through more passionately.”
—JUDY STEED, author of Our Little Secret: Child Sexual Abuse

To her surprise, dismay, and eventually relief, Mary Armstrong, a therapist with over thirty years of experience helping people heal from childhood trauma, uncovered her own history of child sexual abuse at the hands of her grandfather and father. As she tells her harrowing but heroic tale, she casts light as never before on the issue of repressed memories and the invisible wounds left by childhood trauma.

MARY K. ARMSTRONG is one of Canada's most accomplished trauma therapists. She earned her Master of Social Work degree from the School of Social Work, University of Toronto, and has trained extensively in the techniques of Focusing and EMDR. Mary lives in Toronto.

Ce commentaire est de: Confessions of a Trauma Therapist: A Memoir of Healing and Transformation (Paperback)
Mary Armstrong opens a window into the journey of recovery from childhood sexual abuse. Her memoir helps both therapists and victims to better understand the process and experience of recovering memories - the confusion, uncertainty, and pain along with the evolution of the self, the retrieval of lost parts and the growth into wholeness. Mary's story, told in simple language - the language of the child as she gradually makes sense of herself - provides a map of healing. Those who help survivors will have a better understanding of their inner worlds and those who are engaged in the healing process themselves will find a comforting companion to help them on their way. The book, telling the story of an extremely successful woman's life, offers both inspiration and hope. Anyone who's life has been touched by childhood sexual abuse will deeply appreciate Mary's disclosure - her "confession" of the deepest secret a child can hold. All readers, with or without prior exposure to the world of childhood sexual abuse, will find themselves with a new level of understanding and compassion after reading Confessions of a Trauma Therapist. This book can help move our culture out of darkness and denial toward true healing and wholeness. I highly recommend it to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confessions of a Trauma Therapist, May 1 2010

Ce commentaire est de: Confessions of a Trauma Therapist: A Memoir of Healing and Transformation (Paperback)
Mary Armstrong's book charts an extraordinary journey. The author, who is a respected and internationally recognized therapist, tells the story of how she discovered she had been sexually abused as a child. Over a number of years she finally came to terms with a past she had never been able to consciously acknowledge. It was a painful experience, both for her and, in part, for her husband. But Armstrong is clear that it was also a pivotally transformative time in her life.

However, this is not just a tell-all tale. Armstrong writes simply and honestly about her damaged childhood, what she perceived as her "failures" as a wife, her relationships with her mother and her sister, her delight when she became a mother herself and her growing wish to establish an independent practice as a therapist.

As a result, her book will resonate not only with readers who have themselves been victims of childhood sexual abuse but also with anyone who has struggled with a lack of self-worth, family relationships and a desire to be a strong and caring independent person -- in other words, pretty much everyone.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding, Inspiration, and Hope, Oct 29 2010
Ce commentaire est de: Confessions of a Trauma Therapist: A Memoir of Healing and Transformation (Paperback)
Mary Armstrong's life story helped me to understand', exactly and movingly, 'how childhood sexual abuse can alter a life . . . and how the painful work of recovery can restore it. Restore it, and go one better: Mary reveals how recovery has deepened her understanding of herself and her compassion for others.

This book will inspire and give hope to anyone who has suffered childhood sexual abuse. It shows the way.

As a psychotherapist, I would also recommend it to professionals working with victims of abuse. Because the book describes what a victim experiences at every stage: 'the abuse itself; the effects on one's life over the years; the recovery process. Mary is a psychotherapist, and a profoundly reflective person, making her insights at each stage particularly revealing.

The book is also about yoga and dreams and the spiritual path. Reading it on that level alone, I found it extremely interesting.
