This is a small handbook for psoriasis patients, using
language that any high school graduate can understand.
Numerous illustrations and case summaries help explain what
psoriasis is, how it is triggered, and how it can be treated.
Each chapter concludes with a list of "Facts to Remember"
that highlights do1s and dont1s for the patient. Especially
notable is the concluding chapter, "It's Up To You," which
encourages the reader to take a pro-active role in
controlling the disease. Also notable is the chapter on
"Total Care," which emphasizes the importance of each
patient1s general health and lifestyle as they relate to his
or her psoriasis.
As one who has struggled with psoriasis for 35 years, I am
especially glad to have so much valuable information
summarized in one small book. Even more important, I
believe, is the overall message: that we patients are capable
of understanding the basics of psoriasis, and with optimism
and persistance, can do a great deal to help ourselves.
Dermatologists should present this book to every psoriasis
patient over 12 years of age, especially in this era of
managed care. Three minutes with the doctor and another
prescription simply cannot provide the information and
encouragement that are so important to psoriasis patients.
