Product Description

About the Author

Kathleen E. Donovan served in the Peace Corps as a primary health care worker in the Philippines (1984-86). She served as International Program Director for the YMCA in Japan (1987-89), supervising as well as teaching in their English-language program. She had several years of management experience in the movie theater industry before obtaining her master's degree in social work at Catholic University (1994). She currently works as a social-skills and communication-skills coach in the Washington, D.C. area, to assist children with various learning and behavioral challenges.

In the course of recovering from a near fatal assault she suffered in 1993, Kathy drew on her life-long love of sports, as well as her extensive experience in teaching and counseling, to become a coach of girl's soccer and basketball teams. CONSICOUS COACHING presents a communications approach to some of the problems that arise in youth sports, offering a variety of innovative coaching and team-building techniques, as well as insights into the psychology of both coaching and learning a sport. The author also offers a candidly critical assessment of some prevailing approaches to youth coaching.

Written originally as a personal coaching journal, Conscious Coaching is presented in a direct and readable style, focusing on specific incidents and personalities encountered in the course of coaching. Kathy vividly records her own observations, reactions, and difficulities in dealing with each situation. The result is a fascinating and sometimes moving personal account that will become a valued resource for anyone involved in youth sports.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for any parent of sports-minded kids!, Jan 28 2001

This is not just for soccer moms. If you coach kids, have kids in sports, or are an adult involved in any way with organized youth sports, this is a MUST read. The author brings a deeper level of understanding and revelation about providing a healthy and positive experience for sports-minded kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concious Coaching: Your Soccer Kids Will Love You for It., Jan 11 2001
By Chandra W. Tiwari - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Conscious Coaching: The Soccer Man's Bible (Paperback)
Sports education today plays an increasingly powerful role in shaping our children's behavior. Indeed, it is capable of imparting to them a host of character-shaping attributes, including - but not limited to - confidence, discipline, perseverance, assertiveness, decisiveness, insightfulness, humility, fortitude and temperance... all of which empowers them to embrace life's challenges long after they have kicked their last soccer ball or swung a final home run. Conscious Coaching will help you to recognize that, within the confines of sports education (and by extension, any other form of education), the dynamics manifested among coach, parent, and child can either lead to wholly empowering experiences for everyone involved - children especially - or, in stark contrast, result in emotional upheaval for all parties involved, particularly the young and most impressionable.

Whether you are a parent, coach or teacher, this book will "coach" you to discern what works in your relationship with others (coach, child and parent) so that you can continue to reinforce those attributes that are positive. Most importantly though, it will guide you to recognize and shape your own behavior within those unfolding dynamics to effect desired outcomes and achieve empowering results.

Having said as little, it should be noted also that Conscious Coaching is a quick read; you will love it for its clarity, as much as for its wisdom.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUCH MORE THAN A BOOK ON SOCCER!, Jan 4 2001
By Jane Wilkes, MSW - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Conscious Coaching: The Soccer Man's Bible (Paperback)
Finally, a book which not only brings sanity back to competitive sports, but to basic human interaction. Nasty and all-too-often violent behavior on and off the playing field is indicative of an ill society, and this book becomes an excellent model for change where it's impact will be the greatest--with the children. The author has the credentials and natural skill to bring important information to light using the game of soccer and a youth soccer team as her vehicle. She is not only a sports enthusiast, but also a mental health professional, and incorporates the best of both worlds together in a book that is long overdue. It is not only a model for coaching, but a paradigm for problem-solving through structure and clarity which the kids seem to hunger for. She guides them gently to the root of a problem, either within the individual or the group, through awareness, and teaches them skills for problem-solving, all the while never letting them forget to have fun with the game. They naturally incorporate these skills (and joy) into their daily lives as evidenced by their parents' comments. Likewise, it is not only a joy to read, but becomes a practical guide for, not only those working with children, but for anyone interested in becoming a little more enlightened through awareness.
