Product Description

The latest advice from the original bestselling Back Doctor

Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Hamilton Hall wrote the book that changed the way back-pain sufferers deal with their affliction. In The Back Doctor, he advocated activity instead of bed rest. In place of braces and girdles, he suggested that patients follow a program of specific exercise. Most of all, he took the mystery out of back pain.

Three out of four Canadian adults, and an increasing number of children, suffer some form of back discomfort. They make up a huge and lucrative market for unscrupulous practitioners. New treatments – new drugs, new devices, and supposedly new, high-tech therapies – are advertised daily. New controversies, such as a recent scare about chiropractic neck manipulation, find their way into newspaper headlines. A Consultation with the Back Doctor is Dr. Hall’s response to these and other developments.

This is a completely new book. It is written, like its predecessors, in an informal, easy-to-understand question-and-answer format. Readers will come away with a sound understanding of their condition and a practical course of action to make it better.

(REAL NAME)
My family doctor recommend this book when I saw him for low-back pain in early July. Getting out of bed every morning had become so painful that I had to stand up slowly and hold on to the bed as I made for the bathroom. As the day progressed my back felt better. As a 65 year-old basketball referee, I wanted to get low-back relief before our annual mid-August refresher camp. A few pages into the Back Doctor I took comfort in being a member of the largest group (85%) of back pain sufferers -- Pattern 1 neck/back dominant pain. The primary solution: "sloppy pushups" several times a day. This is a pushup in which one keeps one's belt on the floor while fully extending the arms to look at the ceiling. At the beginning the sloppy pushups aggravated the pain and were a struggle; today, 6 weeks later they are painless and fluid. I got through my ref's camp without low-back pain and ended the week officiating two games with no spike in low-back pain.

The primary theme's in Dr. Hall's approach to back pain are summarized in this paragraph at p.269 as he responds to the Question: "What strategies do you subbest for getting someone back to work?":"Emphasize the benign nature of neck and back pain. Stress the self-limiting nature of every acute attack. Eliminating fear, particularly fear that work will harm the spine, is the best place to start. Provide enough anatomy education to ensure the patient understands that the spine is strong and stable, that discs don't slip, and that backs never go out. Most important of all, give the responsibility for recovery back to the patient. The injured party must take control, not wait for someone else to solve the problem."

But Dr. Hall's book is as helpful to those dealing with chronic pain, whether or not it involves the neck or the back. I happen to have a chronically painful shoulder dating from a bizarre level-crossing accident in 1975, whose pain I have learned to call RSD (Reflex Symopathetic Dystrophy) or CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). So I was especially focused on Dr. Hall's discussion of "pain-focused behaviour." Every person who suffers chronic pain has to make a decision at the outset, and often to confirm it daily or more often, either to let THE PAIN take control or to regain and maintain control of THE PAIN. I've emphasized "the pain" to stress the life-preserving importance of this decision and the many forces ably catalogued by Dr. Hall which are arrayed against the pained -- litigation, monetary awards, disability certification...

In summary, A Consultation with The Back Doctor, is a comprehensive, accessible, and very practical guide to diagnosing your neck and back pain, and, if you happen to be one of the 98% of cases where surgery is not indicated, to managing your rehabilitation and the pain that comes with the territory. G. Vance, Ph.D., August 24, 2009
