Product Description

A visual look at the architectural details of sustainable residential spaces

The Contemporary Design in Detail series takes a highly visual look at architectural design details that are more often dealt with in a technical textbook format. The books take readers on a tour of the best details designed by great architects around the world. The series provides a powerful presentation of the most challenging and evolving architectural and design categories.

Sustainable Environments focuses on the type of architectural details in distinctive, sustainable residential spaces. It includes sections on components such as cooling or shading devices, building techniques that create minimal impact on the land, active systems, and the use of new sustainable materials as well as those that are salvaged or recyclable. The book presents recent work by architects from around the globe in color photographs and architectural drawings, and is structured according to categories of architectural detail.

In these days, where natural resources are becoming rare or harder to find and where our very survival is based upon being more aware of the environment and our impact on it, this book makes it a little easier. This book explores the philosophy of green and sustainable construction. There are many different pictures of beautiful houses that are made with environmentally friendly materials or of recycled materials. This book gives one many ideas of how one could build a house that certainly won't have your neighbours shaking their heads, but perhaps being envious. One of the philosophies that I am beginning to appreciate is re-using material from previous buildings. If you think of it, the wood in older buildings is probably much better than that which you buy at lumber yards now and there are many other things such as brick that could be salvaged, saving trees from being cut and energy being used. Not to mention that every material gains a patina over the years which makes its incorporation into new construction very attractive. That what this book will do, it will inspire you to see the posibilities of sustainable construction. I highly recommend it...the world will be a better place for it.
