Review

“Grant excels in combining accessibility and rigor in his coverage of difficult concepts in corporate strategy. His Contemporary Strategy Analysis is one of the best available textbooks for advanced undergraduates and MBAs.” George Yip, LondonBusinessSchool

"The new edition of Grant's extraordinarily well-written textbook has the same accessible style as prior editions. This comprehensive textbook makes complicated material understandable and clear. The many new capsule examples of recent business events as well as text material based on new research keep the book completely up-to-date. The book also contains revisions of core materials for even greater clarity. Students rave about this book." Constance Helfat, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth

"By skillfully weaving scholarly ideas with modern-day issues, Contemporary Strategy Analysis provides students of strategy with a leading edge textbook that links the practical realities of strategic management to the intellectual foundations of strategic thinking." Ari Ginsberg, New York University, Stern School of Business --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Economists approach but Porter is better, May 1 2002
By A Customer
I bought this book because I was hoping it would provide me with good guidance in terms of how to use analysis techniques that would support my strategy consulting work. It has a heavy economists' leaning. This is both good and bad. It is good in that it gives some tried and true ways of understanding contemporary strategy. It is bad in that it misses out on the many ways and means by which non-economists understand contemporary strategy and is very thick in terms of its descriptions. It is not a "how to" book, that is for sure. Since competition today often seems to defy economic logic, this economic approach can only go so far. And there is still no better economist's approach than Professor Michael Porter's materials and this book certainly adds little to that great body of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional balance of concepts, techniques & applications, April 21 2002
By

(REAL NAME)
Grant's book provides an exceptional balance of concepts, techniques & applications about business strategy. The most unique & impressive feature of the book is its fair analysis of various schools/approach of strategy. The content flows fluidly chapter after chapter, it's an enjoyable read. The treatment of each topic is concise with great case studies and references. The goal of business strategy - maximizing & sustaining shareholder value - has been emphasised throughout the book, which makes the book highly practical in the 'real world'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fair and enough to tempt me =), Feb 4 2001
By A Customer
I was fortunated enough to attend Prof. Grant's lectures--this great book doesn't do his justice.

Porter's Industry Analysis shadowed many acadamics; but with ample case studies, Prof. Grant's book provides arable spaces for readers to explore.

If you are bored by the colossal fame of Porter (which he truly deserves it), this book can offer u an equally compatible panorama to investigate.
