This review is from: The 10 Conversations You Must Have Before You Get Married (And How to Have Them) (Hardcover)
My sister bought this book for me. She took Dr. Guy's course at Western and thought he was amazing. My fiance and I weren't sure what to think, but we started reading it and actually found it kind of hard to put down! It starts off with the how to communicate even before going into the ten conversations. We found there was so much to learn about how to talk. More examples like the ones used in the conversations chapters would have been useful.
The communication rules have been really useful to us already. We used to have some really nasty arguments but never really understood why it was that our fights so often become nasty and didn't solve anything. Since we've been paying attention to the fifteen rules, we've been much better at solving our differences without the fight becoming mean.
When we looked at the table of contents and saw what the conversations were we thought we wouldn't learn too much, but it really surprised us what came out! For us, the Leisure chapter and the Family chapter were especially helpful, but in every chapter, we found we were talking about things that had never come up before, and were really interesting to both of us.
The book is really was well written (despite some typos that can be a distraction) and really funny at times. We had some really interesting conversations when we were reading it. Also, the book give movie recommendations for each chapter, which we thought was kind of fun. We have only had a chance to watch one of them so far, but we're looking forward to getting through all of them at some point.
I would highly recommend this book in a serious relationship!
