Review

An emotionally powerful book and an intense read...McLeod's knack for realistic dialogue and for shaping young male characters bring this coming-of-age tale to life.
Now Magazine (Now Magazine )

McLeod's plot works away with quiet efficiency. Leonard comes apart as the book comes together.
Globe and Mail (Globe and Mail )

McLeod...has built a solid reputation as one of the country's best spoken word performers. It turns out his command of language is just as strong on paper, however, as Leonard McKinley is an equally funny, disturbing and poignant tale of a young man struggling to reconcile his strong Christian faith with his increasingly dark impulses.
Monday Magazine (Monday Magazine )

A very funny book about religious extremism... McLeod puts the fun in fundamentalism."
Uptown Magazine (Uptown Magazine )

McLeod's writing is clear, thoughtful and funny and he has produced an entertaining read and a few moral dilemmas.
Broken Pencil (Broken Pencil )

Product Description

A raucous coming-of-age novel about a teenager whose faith in the world and himself is being sorely tested. By the age of thirteen, Leonard McKinley's failure to follow his own moral compass has caused his father's heart attack and triggered an epileptic fit in his dog. How can he learn to suppress his dark, subversive tendencies and balance virtue with fitting in? Leonard's story is both poignant and hilarious as he compels himself through a series of increasingly complex ethical trials in order to become a better human being.

The Convictions of Leonard McKinley won the 29th annual edition of the International 3-Day Novel Contest, established in Vancouver in 1977 and held every Labor Day weekend on laptops and writing pads all over the world; to date, it has spawned twenty-four published novels, not to mention thousands of first drafts and great book ideas.

A publication of 3-Day Books.

5.0 out of 5 stars It will blow your mind with meaning., Nov 24 2007

This review is from: The Convictions of Leonard McKinley (Paperback)
My copy of "The Convictions of Leonard McKinley" was bought at a poetry slam in Ottawa. I picked up the book thinking, "How good could a book be that was written on the ideas built in three days?" The first two pages made me smile, and then chapter upon chapter I was brought into this world of fear, honesty and beauty. A book about a boy becoming a man, with thoughts crashing about his brain like captive killer bees.

This book isn't for everyone, but it should be. This is the book that breaks into our brain and shows us that none of us are perfect, and we all just want to be good people. This book shows you how far one person could go to protect that goodness in himself.

If you really know yourself...this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, Aug 23 2008
This review is from: The Convictions of Leonard McKinley (Paperback)
I picked up this book because I was curious what someone could come up with in three days and I was absolutely blown away. This is the type of book that stays with you for a long time after you finish it. As I read it, I felt my self slowly sinking into Leonard's mad world and only when I finished did I feel like I could come up for air. A great book that would continue to be great even if it were written over a span of three years. I just couldn't put it down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Certainly Full of Convictions, Dec 20 2007
This review is from: The Convictions of Leonard McKinley (Paperback)
The first part of this novel is really strong but the swing to the religious side of the scale doesn't entirely work for me. Creepy yet a good read.
