Kevin Smith switches gears,
By
This review is from: Cop Out (Flics en Service) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I know, I know: He didn't write the thing, he only directed it. I shouldn't judge it as a Kevin Smith film. But, dammit...it IS a Kevin Smith film. His buddies Seann William Scott, Jason Lee, Tracy Morgan, and Bruce Willis are in it. Much of Morgan's dialogue consists of movie quotes from familiar sources (Star Wars most notably) so it's hard not to see this as a Kevin Smith film. It's definitely right up his alley. It's just that Cop Out is really far from original, and towards the end just degenrates into these messy action sequences. Watching Morgan and Willis as cop partners felt like watching a Stake Out remake, it's the same relationship. Then to continue the Stake Out analogy, there's another set of cop partners who act as antagonists to Willis and Morgan. The movie only really sparks when Willis and Morgan are trading witty barbs, Stake Out style, back and forth. Guillermo Diaz, a fine actor in his own right, continues to be stereotyped as a drug dealer. He may as well be playing his Weeds character, Guillermo, except without Mary-Louise Parker to act as his foil. Plot in a nutshell: Willis and Morgan are wild and crazy cops who get suspended for messing up an operation. Willis' daughter (Michelle Trachtenberg) is about to get married and her wedding is going to cost $48,000. Willis can't afford it, but there's no way he's going to let his ex-wife's new husband (Jason Lee) pay for it. He therefore is going to pawn off a very valuable baseball card to pay for the wedding. The card is stolen by Seann William Scott. Chaos ensues. Smith has said before he can't write action. (His idea of action for his Six-Million Dollar Man treatment was that Steve Austin hides behind a rock.) Smith also cannot direct action. The tedious action scenes in this movie just stalled and bored me to tears. It's a shame but it's proof that Kevin Smith should stick to what he knows. Hopefully he'll realize this and do Clerks III next. This edition came with a blu-ray disc, a DVD, and a digital copy which I will never use. Bonus features include audio commentaries and something called "Maximum Comedy Mode" which truthfully I haven't checked out due to lack of interest. I can honestly say this isn't the worst Kevin Smith film -- I give that honour to the terrible Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back -- but it's not even close to his best. If he could have re-written this movie, Tarantino-style, to be mostly clever dialogue, then maybe it would have been something. 3 stars. Not sure who is going to enjoy this movie, but at least Smith fans will get some Jason Lee in there.

This review is from: Cop Out/Flics en Service (DVD)
this movie is hilarious - it was very quick and entertaining - Bruce Willis was in his element in this movie - a smart mouthed cop who makes his own rules and of course saves the day.it was a fun movie to watch and it lloked like he had fun making it - Tracey Morgan was amazing as his partner in crime prevention - the two actors had great comedic chemistry and literally bounced off each other I am very glad I bought this movie it is one I will be watching over and over again when ever I need a good laugh
