Review

"Dr. Allen's understanding of the causes and effects of trauma, the detritus of the comorbid and ancillary difficulties that lie in its wake, and the potential for healing based on current approaches and new ones on the horizon make this volume a veritable treasure trove of state-of-the-art information and clinical wisdom.... This brilliant and compelling book leaves me feeling hopeful about the possibility for growth and generativity for those who have sustained trauma-and inspired by what contemporary psychiatry also offers to help them flourish."-- "From the Foreword by Kathryn J. Zerbe, M.D."

Product Description

Combining years of research, teaching, and experience treating trauma survivors, Dr. Jon G. Allen offers compassionate and practical guidance to understanding trauma and its effects on the self and relationships.Coping With Traumais based on more than a decade of Dr. Allen's experience conducting educational groups for persons struggling with psychiatric disorders stemming from trauma. Written for a general audience, this book does not require a background in psychology. Readers will gain essential knowledge to embark on the process of healing from the complex wounds of trauma, along with a guide to current treatment approaches.

In this supportive and informative work, readers will be introduced to and encouraged in the process of healing by an author who is both witness and guide. This clearly written, insightful book not only teaches clinicians about trauma but also, equally important, teaches clinicians how to educate their patients about trauma.

Reshaped by recent developments in attachment theory, including the importance of cumulative stress over a lifetime, this compelling work retains the author's initial focus on attachment as he looks at trauma from two perspectives. From thepsychological perspective, the author discusses the impact of trauma on emotion, memory, the self, and relationships, incorporating research from neuroscience to argue that trauma is a physical illness. From thepsychiatric perspective, the author discusses various trauma-related disorders and symptoms: depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and dissociative disorders, along with a range of self-destructive behaviors to which trauma can make a contribution.

Important updates include substantive and practical information on• Emotion and emotion regulation, prompted by extensive contemporary research on emotion—which is becoming a science unto itself. • Illness, based on current developments in the neurobiological understanding of trauma. • Depression, a pervasive trauma-related problem that poses a number of catch-22s for recovery. • Various forms of self-destructiveness—substance abuse, eating disorders, and deliberate self-harm—all construed as coping strategies that backfire. • Suicidal states and self-defeating aspects of personality disorders.

The author addresses the challenges of healing by reviewing strategies of emotion regulation as well as a wide range of sound treatment approaches. He concludes with a new chapter on the foundation of all healing: maintaining hope.

This exceptionally comprehensive overview of a wide range of traumatic experiences, written in nontechnical language with extensive references to both classic and contemporary theoretical, clinical, and research literature, offers a uniquely useful guide for victims of trauma, their family members, and mental health care professionals alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This Book: Help Yourself and Help Others, Nov 2 2006
By C. Meier - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Coping With Trauma: Hope Through Understanding (Paperback)
Anyone coping with trauma or who wants or needs to know how to help someone coping with trauma will benefit from reading this book. When I am or have been really struggling to just get through the day, and all I could do was eat sleep and read a few pages...this is the book I read. It is always by my bed within reach. I have bought copies for friends, asked my therapist to read it, and had the good fortune to meet Jon Allen as a patient in a psyche hosptial where he taught trauma patients about what trauma does to people and how to cope. I wish I could convey the deep understanding and compassion and dedication this man shared with us and how much he listened to each and every persons story with such attention and helpful feedback. This book is a reflection of all that I experienced and more. The chapters on emotion, memory and relationships helped me to understand things I thought I already understood. This book has helped me and helped me help others. I wish everyone would read this book. There are so many ways people get traumatized and don't even know it and even if they did, so many don't know that there are important things to understand and ways to cope and hopefully heal.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy one book on trauma, here it is!, Dec 22 2005
By S. McKinley "evalu8er" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Coping With Trauma: Hope Through Understanding (Paperback)
If you buy just one book on Trauma this is the one to buy. Not only does Dr. Allen write with compassion and understanding, but he writes both about despair and hope. Trauma survivors reading the first half of the book will see themselves and their histories in the details he writes about trauma. You will also come to a better understanding of just why Trauma is so hard to leave behind. His chapters on brain physiology may seem complicated, but more than anything they are worth wading through for you to gain forgiveness for yourself and the persistence of your traumatic reactions. In the second half of the book he offers hope in the form of chapters (not lists) of very specific things you can do to help yourself recover. Dr. Allen treats the trauma survivor with respect and confidence that s/he can and will work towards a better future.

While I have written this review in the voice of trauma survivors, professionals who work with trauma are DUTY BOUND to read this book. The documentation and comprehensive review of current literature will update your knowledge and give you very specific information on working with trauma survivors. In addition, Dr. Allen shows a respect for survivors that all professionals would all do well to emulate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and wise "self-education" book, Jun 27 2005
By H Lerner - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Coping With Trauma: Hope Through Understanding (Paperback)
This book will help trauma sufferers and the mental health professionals who work with traumatized individuals. While filled with helpful advise, it moves beyond simple explanations and easy answers. It's not a "light" read, but it's well worth the effort. This is a healing and informative book for any reader who wants to understand the effects of trauma on the self and relationships.
