Product Description

From Amazon

This techniques book shows beginning and intermediate users how to use CorelDRAW 7 and 8 and the companion product, Corel Photo-Paint, to produce sophisticated artwork. Although the final images are far from simple, the book makes them accessible with its large full-color screen shots and clear instructions. You first learn illustration techniques, while creating artwork such as a glass of wine in CorelDRAW or a logo in Corel Photo-Paint. Next the book teaches design techniques, showing you how to build a brochure with original type treatment in CorelDRAW, and create special text effects and simulate the appearance of stained glass, gold, and chrome in Corel Photo-Paint. Finally, you learn techniques that work in both CorelDRAW and Corel Photo-Paint. You create cutout shapes, shadows, and embossed images in both packages. Overall, this book's straightforward guidance will help you move beyond dabbling in CorelDRAW to using the software for producing real artwork. --Kathleen Caster

4.0 out of 5 stars Full Color Effects - But Not For Beginners Oct. 6 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Being already familiar with CorelDRAW and Photopaint, I found the book to be an excellent source of ideas. I cannot however recommend this book for the uninitiated. The authors assume a functional (read intimate) familiarity with the programs' tools and settings. The book presents an excellent balance between draw and paint and the authors write in light and whimisical manner, making the book a fairly easy read. What I found most useful is that it is published in full-color throughout. This makes following along with the projects much easier since there is no guessing how a particular effect should look. On the downside, the full-color also results in steep price for this 1/2" thick book. Overall, I would readily recommend it for advanced users, suggest it to intermediate users, and steer beginners to the "Visual Quickstart" or "Dummies" series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every serious Corel User May 14 1998

I ordered the book from Amazon.com a couple weeks ago and I am well on my way to becoming a more effective illustrator thanks to David and Gary.
I am an illustrator, Instructor and president of the Aspiring Corel Enthusiasts User Group based out of Sacramento, CA. It is books like this that inspire me to inspire others.
David and Gary have out done themselves on this one. All that is left for us as serious Corel users is to buy their book and show them some of the same support they have been providing Corel users around the world for years.
It is dedicated Corel Experts like David and Gary who give us the courage to do the designs we can do, the understanding their are still some designs others will have to do for us and provide us with the infinite wisdom to know the difference.
Thanks Guys.......

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for serious users Aug. 23 1998
Format:Paperback
As a certified CorelDRAW instructor, I teach the basics of how to use the tools. Given the power of the program, there are not enough hours in a one or even a two day class to teach what to do with the tools you have learned. This book is the next step. Step by step, the authors show you techniques to produce the images, Gary using DRAW and Dave using PhotoPaint. These well thought out and excellently illustrated exercises give you the next step in becoming an expert user of CorelDRAW. I recommend it to my students as a follow up to the classes I teach. If you are serious about using CorelDRAW as an illustration tool or CorelPHOTOPAINT as a bitmap manipulation tool, get this book. You will never regret it.

Studio Techniques by Gary Priester has been the most inspirational corel draw book I have (and I have read many). His ability to teach many skills and techniques in just one of his tutorials is absolutely amazing....His ability to use colors and create truely "gem like" creations with them has left me with my mouth open more than once! All of this means nothing to me if the person with these abilities lacks teaching skills...and this is where Gary shines above most others.... When you combine "Creative Genious" with truely great teaching and writing skills you have "Studio Techniques.." by Gary Priester!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining Sept. 20 1998

Format:Paperback
This book both teaches and entertains. The lessons consist of a series of succinct easy to follow steps that are suitable for both beginners and experienced users. My favorite parts are the sections entitled "Variations on a Theme" in which the authors suggest shortcuts and enhancements to the basic lessons. After reading these I had the tools and techniques to create my own designs. The "Notes" and "Tips" are useful too, and reflect the authors' deep experience in using all versions of Corel Draw and Corel Paint. And there is quite a bit of sly humor in the text and the sample designs.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Apprenticeship: Oct. 17 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
As an amateur graphic artist, I always felt that, had I the opportunity to apprentice under a master, I could truly learn my craft. However, this was not to be and I resorted to teaching myself in the stolen moments among life's responsibilities. Fortunately for me, I recently have had the opportunity to apprentice under TWO masters, thanks to the invaluable book by David A. Huss, Gary W. Priester , CorelDRAW Studio Techniques. Many thanks to Gary and Dave for providing this unique learning opportunity for those of us who were unable to receive formal training in this field.

5.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for! Oct. 20 1998

Just what I was looking for - or so I thought! I was desperate to learn more about metallic effects and how to get the best out of Corel Xara 2. Once I'd discovered how to transpose commands between Corel Draw 8 and Corel Xara then this excellent book really came into full use. An interesting side effect was that it also persuaded me to buy Corel Draw 8! But the book? Quite simply, I reckon it's a sizzler, giving away lots of secrets to us dabblers. Despite its price hike to cross the Atlantic - it cost me 35 pounds here in good old England - I can thoroughly recommend this book to you all.

If you REALLY want to learn how to use the CorelDraw8 suite, this is the one book you MUST have! Gary and Dave have shown how to create complex projects in simple, clear steps that anyone should be able to complete with good results. I have several books on this program and although they are good reference sources, they don't even come close for actually getting in there and showing you how to get your job done. If you follow along with Gary and Dave you'll get results that look like they must have taken weeks instead of minutes to complete. Don't tell your boss! :)
