4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Heavenly!! Jun 14 1999
Format:Audio CD
The Coronation is an incredible work of art that is so beautiful that it often brings tears to my eyes. Mozart has captured the Divine in this piece. I bought this particular recording because it also includes the Vesperae Solennes which is another beatiful piece. The Vesperae is not as strong as the Coronation but the Laudate Dominum (track 12) is INCREDIBLY beautiful and easily makes up for what the other parts lack. I also really enjoy the Epistle Sonata (track 3) which is not a part of the original Coronation, but works really well as a transitional piece. I rated this CD only 4 stars because I am not happy with the recording, there is a lot of background static and hiss which surprised me to hear on a CD. It also has a somewhat flat sound. I originally heard this work on a beat-up, dusty LP and somehow the LP has more depth (but much more static). I HIGHLY recommend the Coronation, Vesperae, and Epistle Sonata, however, I recommend finding a more recent recording on a different label that includes all 3 pieces. Favorite tracks: # 12 and 7 are my favorite, then 1,2,3,6, &8.

Christopher Hogwood and company score again with a rousing yet reverant telling of two of Mozart's less frequently heard choral works. The Coronation Mass is a thrill; crisply sung with refreshingly clear intonation and toning. The solo quartet features uniformly strong singers who zip and soar with Mozartian ease. It's been quite a while since I've heard as strong a quartet as this. This production of the Mass alone would place Mozart on a pedestal!

The production of the Vesperae Solennes is also majestic and exuberant. The Laudate Dominum is clearly the strongest of the movements; the soprano solo literally floats above what must be heaven itself.

The latin is not the vulgare pronounciation usually heard in choral readings - but that quibbling can be left to scholars. The rest of us can just hook up and enjoy.

Mammas - play this for your babies and they will never grow up to be cowboys!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful disc Mar 17 2011

This is a terrific re-release of two of my favourite Mozart recordings. The "Coronation Mass" and the Vespers date from 1779 and 1780 respectively and are among his true masterpieces of this period, with rich scoring, amazing harmonic invention, fabulous choral writing and some astonishingly beautiful aria-like movements. Laudate Dominum from the Vespers is among my very favourite movements in all of Mozart's work, which is really saying something.

These performances do full justice to such wonderful music. The Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood have been uniformly excellent for decades and this is well up to their customary level of brilliance. Hogwood uses quite large forces here and they play wonderfully, while the outstanding cast of singers are technically excellent and, to my ear, perfect in their interpretations of the text and sheer beauty of the sound they make. (I have been half in love with Emma Kirkby for years and this disc is one of the reasons why.) It's a lovely, uplifting and inspiring disc of truly great music which has given me huge pleasure for many years. Now that it is available at budget price it's an unmissable bargain too, and I recommend it in the warmest terms.
