I was a little hesitant when considering this set because you never know what the quality will be like, but I was very happy to find it was excellent! I love these old movies, and the reproduction/remastering was really well done.

I read on the official Abbott & Costello website that a computer graphic animated short is being produced for a possible volume four. Finally Abbott & Costello will meet all the Universal monsters in the same short; I definitely can't wait to see it. Abbott & Costello volume 3 is fantastic and Universal Pictures have to be commended for their efforts on this DVD release.

The picture is clear and the sound is very good considering the age of the original prints. Although I'm not a fan of double sided discs, they do keep the costs down making this set very affordable for fans. With 8 more movies for under $25 how can you possibly go wrong? I think some Abbott & Costello movies go together better than others, maybe theme sets would have been a better idea.

As an Abbott and Costello fan I'll definitely take what I can get and at these prices I want them all. Volume 3 provides just as many laughs if not more than volumes 1 & 2 for fans. Whether you're a long time Abbott & Costello fan or just discovering them for the first time, these movies definitely won't disappoint. I hope that volume four is really in the works so I can collect the rest of their movies.

Volume 3: Includes the following 8 movies

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Mexican Hayride
Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff
Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion
Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man
Comin' Round the Mountain
Lost in Alaska
Abbott and Costello Go to Mars

Several of these films were made as the boys entered the downward cycle of their careers. The eight films therefore are not always the "best" but still give roars of laughter. This box set includes the better of the efforts to milk the 'cash cow' of Universal's 1930s horror genre. Once the boys got through with them, the Universal series were dead until disinterred at the turn of the century with the remake of "The Mummy." Fortunately, Hammer Studios filled the gap with a new generation of innovative offerings. In this box set, "Meet Frankenstein" remains one of the grandest efforts by the boys, and it is paired with "Meet the Killer" and "Meet the Invisible Man." "Goes to Mars" is so 1950s politically-incorrect that I found it a riot; the film unintentionally shows how much values about the sexes have changed and therin lies much of its worth. Nice prints of the films. And the price cannot be beat. Amazon listed "Meet Frankenstein" at US$22 or C$27 for a single DVD during July 2004. Here you get EIGHT films for less. Wish we had more box sets at this realistic pricing.
