GPS-compatible, but also a good old map, suitable for orienting yourself along the whole Way, and walking with a compass. You can wander off the track ("Where am I?") and find your own way back. The only drawbacks are folding a map, which can defeat some; and the need for more maps during thorough planning (Ordnance Survey). But this waterproof map is definitely going with me on my Cotswold Way walk -- probably without a GPS or the OS maps I used for planning.
