Review

"This book is an accessible, practical guide to helping these victims through the healing process. This book would be a very useful tool for any professional dealing with the counseling and/or treatment of sexually abused clients." Florida Journal of Public Health

Book Description

The experience of childhood sexual abuse is a trauma that continues to have an impact on survivors throughout their lives. The Second Edition of this accessible, practical guide - fully updated and with a new chapter on the false memory debate - will enable to counsellors become adept at addressing the unique and complex needs of survivors. Claire Burke Draucker identifies the significant healing processes - such as disclosing the abuse, reinterpreting it from an adult perspective, addressing issues related to the context of the abuse and making desired life changes - which are vital to achieve recovery. Each of these processes is discussed in conjunction with the most effective counselling interventions to facilitate resolution, and illustrated through the use of carefully-chosen case examples.

This review is from: Counselling Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (Paperback)
I found this books to be really excellent. It was not a general,...overview. It covered all known symptoms found in survivors, showing how these theories were based on hard statistics. It was amazing to see how far-reaching the effects are of child-abuse. Although written for professional councellors, it could be read by lay councellors and patients alike. I would really recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the effects of child abuse and how to help them.

As an MSW student I was required to read this book for a class in childhood sexual abuse. I found the information provided to be clear, direct and critical to counselling survivors of sexual abuse.
