Book Description

Oct. 7 2008 Country Living
Country Living steps into the kitchen with 500 new and exciting ways to transform the heart of the home. Packed with winning photographs of warm and inviting rooms, this inspiring guide covers color and pattern, floors and walls, storage, appliances, sinks, work surfaces, windows and lighting, and other charming accessories. A stunning image accompanies every tip: see how a small kitchen becomes cozy when it’s filled with warm tones and natural materials; how a checkerboard backsplash brings black cabinets and white walls together; and how a modern refrigerator can work in a retro room—if it’s hidden by a rustic door. Mix surface styles, add an archway to create a separate eating area, and turn an antique cabinet into an attractive place to store and display dishware.
There’s an innovative idea on every page…and a design solution for every kitchen.
A Dual Main Selection of the Homestyle Book Club.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gold Mine of Country Kitchens Oct. 14 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This beautiful book inspired by Country Living Magazine is a pictorial encyclopedia of every style, color, texture and budget to help the renovator and builder design a true country kitchen. It has been a huge inspiration for my 100 year old house makeover. Nothing disappointing about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this book if you're doing a kitchen remodel June 5 2009
By Erica R. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Amazing idea book. Every page is a spectacular, interesting kitchen that is refreshingly original. What I love about this book is it includes working with what you already have. They picture these appliances that are those horrible 80's style BUT they somehow make it look good. It also includes kitchens of various sizes because let's face it if you have a 20x20 open floor plan kitchen it's easy to make it look good. They have everything in this book from clean white/stainless steel kitchens to crazy colored kitchens with 50's appliances. I stopped dog earring the pages after I realized I was doing it with every other page.

Many, many ideas in this book. Took a long time to get through but is a great style idea reference. Many of the pictures have been published before but for once that did not bother me because it put them in one spot that was easy to find rather than going through all of my old magazines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love country or cottage kitchens? Dec 31 2009
By L. M. Keefer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is like a visual file of pictures of country or cottage kitchen ideas and features. Most of us know what we love in design when we see it, before we can put it into words. This book allows us to look at hundreds of attractive kitchens and their unique elements: cabinetry, counters, floors, sinks, wall colors, appliances, storage including pantries, islands, seating and accessories. It shows you how to create the mood or feeling you want your kitchen to create such as light, warm, inviting, colorful, cozy etc.

This book will enable you to listen to your heart and begin to decide what's important to you in your kitchen design, and just as important, what you don't want. It will help you to your prioritize your resources--what you want to splurge on, where you can save. One great aspect of country and cottage design is that it doesn't get dated easily so this book should be useful for many years. Country and cottage style can be updated easily and often inexpensively, sometimes with just stylish accessories. If you love the warmth and texture of country kitchens, this is one of the best books I've seen on this style of kitchen design. I use it in a kitchen design class I team-teach with a kitchen design studio. My students love the book

1.0 out of 5 stars SPEND YOUR MONEY ON A DIFFERENT BOOK Dec 19 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
We are preparing for a home addition that will include a major kitchen renovation. I read the reviews on this book and ordered it hoping to utilize it in my planning phase but was greatly disappointed in it.

The book focuses more on décor rather than design.

I read every page of the book. It has a lot of redundancy in its text just slightly rewording certain sentences over and over again making the same repetitive points to "run the numbers" up to 500 as part of its title. Also, it actually had a couple of text mistakes that weren't caught in proofing. I don't care about the mistakes, per se; but they gave me the impression that the efforts of this book were to create a catchy title to quickly make money without a lot of substance.

A majority of the ideas in this book remind me of a college student's kitchen or a starter home kitchen where the only resources available are family hand-me-downs combined with thrift store and flea market finds. If that's your phase in life (and there's certainly nothing wrong with that - most of us, including myself, live through that phase at one point or another,) you may really enjoy the book and may find it creative and helpful. If you are wondering how to utilize your great-aunt's discarded and distressed furniture, or salvage old tool drawers from your uncle's garage to use as flatware drawers, or want to decorate in somewhat of a fun memorabilia manner (which is different than chic eclectic style standards, you may want to purchase this book.

One of the things I disliked most about the book was its major style theme towards a cluttered look. Research shows that to have a cluttered kitchen (or any room for that matter) leads to additional stress. My family and I enjoy life more when there isn't so much clutter constantly "shouting" at us. I prefer cooking and entertaining friends and family in a more calm atmosphere than what is shown in most pictures in this book.

I'm donating this book to my local library. Hopefully, others will find more value in it than I did.

Post Script of 2013:
I wrote my original review of this book in late 2011 or early 2012. I ultimately ordered 12 kitchen design books from Amazon. This book was the least helpful. Our kitchen renovation is now complete and utilized many ideas from books other than this one.
