I checked out a huge pile of books from the library on color schemes for the "country" home, in preparation for decorating our 1903 house. I ended up buying this one only, and I refer to it frequently. I think it would be helpful for people decorating a variety of types of houses, not just "country." The author presents several color palettes that are highly varied from one another, each reflecting a unique country house "personality." And instead of just three or four coordinating colors, the palettes have about ten colors. There are good descriptions of the colors and the role they play in the palette. The combinations are classic, but infused with interesting twists, and there are excellent photos of the colors used in actual, attractive rooms. The palettes I saw in other books were much less interesting, and the photos of the rooms did not look like rooms I would want to emulate.

This book offers a great browsing experience through many different colors and color combinations, every one of which is totally pleasing and restful. The book is organized according to color schemes: Field and Woodland; Sun, Sea and Sky; Flowers and Blossom; Kitchen Garden; Slate and Stone. This organization allows you to concentrate on one of the "families" at a time if you so wish, but it does make it difficult to easily envision any one room in different colors -- you have to flip back and forth between the five sections to see, say, a kitchen in all five color schemes.
