Book Description

Jan 1 2011
Edythe Amsel is delighted with her first teaching assignment: a one-room schoolhouse in Walnut Hill, Nebraska. Independent, headstrong, and a strong believer in a well-rounded education, Edythe is ready to open the world to the students in this tiny community. But is Walnut Hill ready for her?

Joel Townsend is thrilled to learn the town council hired a female teacher to replace the ruthless man who terrorized his nephews for the past two years. Having raised the boys on his own since their parents' untimely deaths, Joel believes they will benefit from a woman's influence. But he sure didn't bargain on a woman like Miss Amsel. Within the first week, she has the entire town up in arms over her outlandish teaching methods, which include collecting leaves, catching bugs, making snow angels, and stringing ropes in strange patterns all over the schoolyard. Joel can't help but notice that she's also mighty pretty with her rosy lips, fashionable clothes, and fancy way of speaking.

When Edythe decides to take her pupils to hear Miss Susan Anthony speak on the women's suffrage amendment, the town's outcry reaches new heights. Even Joel isn't sure he can support her newfangled ideas any longer. And if he can't trust her to know how to teach the boys, how can he trust her with his heart?

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read! April 9 2011
By Christina Banks TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Someone sign me up for the Kim Vogel Sawyer fan club! Every book I've read of this author has been enjoyable, and Courting Miss Amsel is no exception. Sawyer's characters come alive on the page in a delightfully believable way. They have strengths and weakness, just like the rest of us, and thus make them easy to identify with. Of course, identifying with Edythe Amsel was easy, due to my own teaching experience. The conflicts within the story line pulled me from on cover to the other in a matter of hours. I am so thrilled to add this book to my collection!

I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and fans of Kim Vogel Sawyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A First-Class Story Jan 16 2011
By Carly
Format:Paperback
Courting Miss Amsel... This long-awaited story will be an endearing addition to any Kim Vogel Sawyer fan's collection. In her typical style, Mrs. Sawyer has once again created a sweet, gentle, relaxing story, published through Bethany House* in early January, 2011. Drawing on her own experiences as a teacher, the author has formed a strong, stubborn heroine with the same ideals for her students as the author herself. Courting Miss Amsel begins with the heroine's nervousness and apprehension of a new beginning, combined with troubling memories from her past.

Our always-in-control heroine, Edythe Amsel, is a strong-minded, determined young woman with modern opinions and up-to-date ideas. She also happens to be the brand-new schoolmarm of Walnut Hill, a quiet, old-fashioned prairie town unaccustomed to new-fangled notions. Joel Townsend is the caring and protective uncle of his brother's two orphaned boys, left to Joel's care sometime before. Worrying that the boys need two parents, Joel is also praying for the Lord to send him a wife, and mother for Johnny and Robert. Essentially, secondary characters such as Edythe's land-lady, Luthenia, her sister Missy, and student William, also play a vital role in this tale.

From her first week as teacher of Walnut Hill School, Miss Amsel unconsciously begins to accomplish two things; (1) almost every student in school grows to love her dearly, and (2) the town council is shocked and in consternation over her teaching methods! As time goes on, Edythe must prove herself worthy as teacher, find a way to stop one student's malicious pranks, and discourage the bachelors of town from wanting to court her, (which is what she wants, right? Although she doesn't realize it yet, God is teaching her - through adversities - to lean on, and surrender her control, to Him. What will it take for her to place her trust in the Lord?

Several messages are conveyed in this story, and starting with the most dominant and important we learn along with Miss Edythe Amsel to let go of our control and place our trust in the One in control of everything. Joel learns, and demonstrates to the reader, that when you wait for God's perfect timing and learn His plan for you, your life will be more filled with joy than you could even imagine. Surprisingly, as this story unravels you will also learn interesting information about the suffragist movement and property acts in the late 1800's. Throughout the entire novel, a warmth and contentedness is emanated from the pages, leaving you feeling inspired.

Courting Miss Amsel is a beautiful, heart-felt prairie romance that transports you to another time and place. Really the only negative element is a bit of a lack of warmth in Edythe's character and disposition, especially towards Joel's nephews, at first. This trait is explained and changed later in the story, however, and so cannot really be counted as negative. Flowing calmly and comfortably, with amazingly vivid, real-to-life characters, this story is filled with something that makes you feel as though you are right in Walnut Hill, among friends. This is a first-class story, and fully lives up to the standards set by the author in her previous novels, such as A Hopeful Heart, and Waiting for Summer's Return.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courting Miss Amsel Jan 5 2011
By C. Kendall - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Every time I start reading one of Kim Vogel Sawyer's books I am certain that I will come away from it feeling uplifted and happy. I always look forward to reading Kim's books because I have yet to be disappointed by them. Courting Miss Amsel was another positive and joyful reading experience thanks to this very talented author.

Edythe is an independent woman who is always in control, or so she thinks. As we experience Edythe's first year of teaching the children of Walnut Hill, Nebraska, we see her struggle to maintain control of the many issues and problems that come her way. This story provides an important lesson in learning to trust God and learning that we really do not have control over anything. Edythe must learn this lesson the hard way. She must also learn to give up some of her independent spirit and allow herself to find the love of her life.

As I expected, I really enjoyed Courting Miss Amsel. It is a very relaxing read, which is something I have found with all of Kim's books that I have read. Kim's talent for creating charming and endearing characters (especially the children) add an extra layer of warmth to her books and this book was full of warmth and a happy feel. I got a little frustrated with Joel and Edythe not being honest with each other from the start, but it would be a boring story (and a short one) if they were honest. So, the level of tension was perfect, the amount of action was spot on and the story as a whole was wonderful. I have become such a fan of Kim Vogel Sawyer's work and this book will be going on my favorites list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Town, Good Friends, Good Story Jan 14 2011
By C. Janes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It's been awhile since I've read a historical romance that was as good as this one. While the storyline itself wasn't anything new to the world of books, the delivery of the story was what really captured my attention. Kim's style of writing was so pleasant and easy-going. It felt like I was getting together with an old friend over a glass of sweet tea.

Her characters were down-to-earth people that really cared about one another (even though some were too nosy and troublesome for their own good). "Miz" Kinsley was one of my favorites because she never hesitated to tell it like she saw it. Her character was there to show Edythe that she could run her life on her own for only so long. She cared about Edythe beyond just being her landlord; her desire and prayer was to see Edythe relinquish control of her life over to the Lord. I also really enjoyed Joel's character, and especially his relationship with his nephews. I could picture those boys in my mind's eye as being very cute little youngsters that could've been some michevious little rascals if not for their constant desire to please their Uncle Joel and teacher, Miss Amsel.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was the conversation. Now, Edythe was a very intelligent lady, but almost too intelligent for the people of Walnut Hill. When she arrived spouting her big vocabulary, most folks had to ask her to repeat it. Over time, she became a little easier to relate to. In the mean time, though, what she heard from the townsfolk was some down-home lingo--"Miss" became "Miz," "courting" became "courtin'," and apparently, when one was sick with an illness of sorts, they were "stove up." I have to admit...that last one was a new one for me. :o)

Courting Miss Amsel was such a quick read that I wish it would've lasted longer! After just one book, I think Kim's already earned her place on my favorite author list. And since this was my first experience with Kim's books, I guess I need to go find another one now. :o)

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable western romance with plenty of faith Jan 10 2011
By Christina Lockstein - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Courting Miss Amsel by Kim Vogel Sawyer is a fast-paced historical romance with a lot of heart. Edythe Amsel is determined to start living her life on her terms when she takes a position as schoolteacher in Walnut Hill, Nebraska, away from her family in Omaha. The children of the school quickly fall in love with her when she refuses to use the brutal tactics for discipline that the former teacher employed, but the parents aren't as sure of her ability when she insists on teaching them more than just readin', writin' and 'rithmatic. Joel Townsend has never viewed caring for his nephews, Robert and Johnny, after the death of their parents as a burden, but he understands that any woman he courts must have the same view. Edythe's insistence that she is done with caring for others sets a rift between the two of them that is so large, only God will be able to overcome it. Sawyer's writing is always populated with likable characters and solid plots with God at the center, and this book is no exception. Readers will sympathize with Edythe's love for her students. Joel is strong hero with love for his nephews and the Lord. Readers will hope that Sawyer intends to revisit Walnut Hill again soon.
