Book Description

Jan 27 2010
Targeted by a terrorist cell, Bryn McAllister survives a bombing at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut only to be left to die in a desert cellar. When she is rescued by Navy SEAL Lieutenant Declan McCabe and his team, Bryn must rely on the handsome officer to get her to safety. But just when she thinks the nightmare is over, family friend and legendary CIA operative Luke Hutchinson recruits her and McCabe to help track down the terrorist mastermind responsible for the attack. With Bryn determined to see the terrorist brought to justice, Dec joins up to protect her, prepared to do whatever it takes to keep her safe during their dangerous mission. Battling the explosive attraction between them, Dec fights to keep his distance from her so he can do his job and keep her alive. But when plans fall apart and Bryn is captured, he must make the agonizing choice between his duty as a SEAL and the life of the woman he loves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice pacing, likable characters, good series! Jun 18 2011

Well. I've exhausted my Suzanne Brockman, so this was a great find. I won't give the summary, as it's been done pretty well before. But, some details you might be interested in... The romance is sweet and believable, the action is detailed without getting boring, the heroine is feisty without being "too stupid to live," and her civilian responses to the ugly realities of counterterrorism operations seem pretty honest. The villain is truly villainous, but not simplistic. The sex is hot, but without the over-the-top discussions of every parry and thrust and that so characterize another very popular SEAL writer, Lora Leigh.

The side characters are also interesting enough that you will be looking for other books with the related characters. That's my favorite kind of book - one that leaves me happy and ready to read the next!

5.0 out of 5 stars An adrenaline rush Mar 24 2010

As current as today's news, Cover of Darkness is scary as all get out at times.

Bryn McAllister of American/Lebanese heritage, a social worker in Oregon, visits her politically powerful father in Beirut. After his death and her captures by longtime enemies of her father, Bryn's life becomes entangled with Navy SEAL Lt. Declan McCabe (Dec) and with Luke Hutchinson's (the ex-husband and father of Bryn's friend Emily and her son Rayne).

Farouck Tehrazzi, a religious zealot, a Harvard graduate, and American trained fighter, has sworn jihad until all infidels are destroyed. His warped mind makes him determined to capture his old enemy's daughter--Bryn.

The testosterone level all but sucks the oxygen out of the room after Dec's SEAL team rescues Bryn then has to hole up to wait out a sandstorm. Their male protective energy is palpable. They watch Bryn, under difficult conditions, keep moving even when it seems her last ounce of strength is gone, and when the fighting starts, she proves to be a good one to have on their side.

She calls up every skill and instinct she has to survive even when things look hopeless. She is feminine, gentle by nature, but incredibly tough when she needs to be. Even when Luke puts her at great risk, she "sucks it up" and does her part even though it is degrading and disgusting.

Dec, a born leader, loves the adrenaline rush of the action Navy SEALs engage in, but he questions the advisability of doing it for too long after he sees how Luke Hutchinson operates. His attraction to Bryn makes him rethink his priorities.

The many intriguing secondary characters and their motivations, the subterfuge, hate, and the love make Cover of Darkness a breathtaking and a heartbreaking story of life in a war zone and what it takes to survive. The price is sometimes high. The excitement, fear, and horror keep the adrenaline pumping at top speed as the story unfolds. How love survives and even thrives in such times is a mystery and a miracle.

Kaylea Cross' writing style plunks the reader down into the middle of the action, traitorous deals, and the horrors of war as she mines the best and the worst of human nature to create a phenomenal love story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, totally unbelievable premise Oct 21 2011

3.5/5.0

As much as I wanted to, I just couldn't nudge this story to a 4 star. The believability factor was just to great to overcome.

Consider the premise: A young civilian woman is caught in a terrorist bombing, kidnapped, then recovered by U.S. Navy SEALs. Despite her complete lack of training or experience, she is asked to join the special ops team to help capture the man responsible for her abduction. While posing as a belly dancer/prostitute, she is allowed to be taken into a room with the terrorists and left to wing it. Later, she follows the team into battles, bombings and again, is dropped of by herself NO back-up whatsoever) with a suspected terrorist traitor. Now, does this sound like anything even remotely realistic... really????? Either the author believes our military stupid to the point of insane or believes the reader to be so.

IF (and that's a very big if) one can overlook that HUGE glitch, the book is very good. It is exciting, enlightening and incorporates everything a great romantic suspense should.
