Product Description

From Amazon.com

In a pop world where history is rarely acknowledged beyond whatever American Idol dishes out, Mandy Moore has discovered a stash of old records. The 19-year-old singer-actress who first appeared with 1999’s "So Real" has now decided to stretch her artistry with a dozen ’70s and ’80s touchstones. The results are mixed, but in the end Coverage is a success. Never over singing just because she can, but in proudly good voice, she brings worthy new shades to XTC’s "Senses Working Overtime," Todd Rundgren’s "Can We Still Be Friends" and Blondie’s "One Way or Another," while acknowledging the breakthroughs of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon . Whether she’ll continue to follow this path is unknown, but this CD is an achievement Moore can be proud of. --Heather Court

Album Description

Mandy Moore's latest release is a collection of cover songs ranging from the upbeat, "Senses Working Overtime" (orginally recorded by XTC) through to "Have A Little Faith In Me" (John Hiatt). The album is comprised of contemporary versions of classic songs for which Mandy has always shown great interest and passion. Among the artists she covers are Joan Armatrading, Elton John, Todd Rundgren, Cat Stevens, The Waterboys and more.

Some who have lent their vocals are Evan Dando (formerly of Lemonheads), Dan Wilson (Semisonic), and New Power Generation.

On Coverage, Mandy selects a wide range of material which showcase her vocal growth and emotional maturity, including twelve classic pop/rock anthems and ballads from the 1970s and 80s. Adding a soulfulness to Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends," putting a Nashville twang to Carly Simon's "Anticipation," and rocking out on Joan Armatrading's rollicking "Drop The Pilot," Moore reinvents the music.

After giving herself a crash course in singer-songwriter, rock and folk music from that era, Mandy, along with producer John Fields (Andrew WK), also unearthed and updated lesser-known pop gems. XTC's "Senses Working Overtime" kicks off Coverage with modern DJ scratches. Departing from the current dance/pop sound, Moore's version of Elton John's "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" is bolstered with countrified mandolin and lush string arrangements, while The Waterboys' "Whole of The Moon" achieves a symphonic splendor with a full brass section.

Certain to appeal to fans of the originals, Moore is equally eager to introduce Coverage to people her own age. "I love what they're saying," she says of such artists as Joe Jackson ("Breaking Us In Two") and John Hiatt ("Have A Little Faith In Me"). "It's universal, it's timeless, it's done in a way that's not so homogenized."

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Transition, Aug 22 2009
By Adam Lee (Edmonton) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I just bought this because it's some of her "post-pop" era work, and i really like her voice in general. I knew a few songs from the start but even the ones i didn't know sound good with her singing them. It's definitely a good transition to her newer albums and a departure from her older work, so depending on what your musical tastes are will be a factor. Personally i think her new stuff is great, way better than her old stuff, as it's more mature sounding and suits her very well. Her style/sound has evolved over the past few years and her newer albums don't seem like they'll fade over time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mandy Moore-Coverage, Jan 14 2005
By A Customer
I liked Mandy Moore's acting a lot and I really enjoy listening to old songs so I bought this CD. I was expecting nice MAndy Moore-ish pop but instead I got this country-rock that had MAndy sounding like a tiger growling or something. Her vocals have no emotion at all. It sounds like she's singing karaoke! This music doesn't suit her at all. The only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 was because of the song "Mona Lisas and MAd Hatters" but who can make that song sound bad? Overall this CD was a complete waste of money but a country-rock fan may like it so I wont tell you to buy it or not. I hope this helps you. Use your own taste.
