Product Description

From Amazon.com

As the eagerly awaited Cowboy Bebop feature film reunites the original director, screenwriter, composer, and vocal cast, it's not surprising that the film plays like an expanded TV episode. What should be the routine capture of a two-bit hacker by Faye escalates into a deadly game of cat and mouse, as Spike and the gang struggle to prevent the evil Vincent Volaju from murdering every human on Mars. Director Shinichiro Watanabe handles the action sequences with his usual panache. Inside the sinister Cherious Medical research facility, Spike fights a beautiful agent, using a push broom in a series of maneuvers Jackie Chan might envy. The climactic duel between Spike and Vincent plays against innocent yet eerie images of a Halloween carnival, recalling the amusement park setting of episode 20, "Pierrot Le Fou." Knockin' on Heaven's Door will delight fans of the series and provide an excellent introduction for the uninitiated who want to know why Cowboy Bebop is so popular on both sides of the Pacific. (Rated R: violence, brief nudity, minor profanity, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Additional Features

As special editions go, this Cowboy Bebop DVD isn't that loaded. The bulk of the extras are six featurettes--about 35 minutes of material--consisting of interviews with the key talents including creator Shinichiro Watanabe and the vocal talent (both Japanese and American). Because the Bebop DVD series was void of any design extras, fans should eat up the 100 or so production drawings and a dandy storyboard presentation. Listed as "music videos," the two songs are essentially clean opening and closing animation cuts (without credits). Fans will also appreciate that the film is presented in both original Japanese language and English in Dolby 5.1. The film lost its subtitle, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," from its American theatrical run for the DVD. --Doug Thomas

Technically Brilliant but without a soul Oct 4 2003
Format:DVD
I was really looking forward to the release of this movie. I was a big fan of the show and when I heard that the movie was essentially a longer TV episode that actually appealed to me. Unfortunately, during the hiatus between the end of the show and the production of the movie, the team forgot what made the show good. The characters seem to be only shadows of their former selves, the plot is not developed and events happen for reasons that are not explained (For example: just why is a character involved in a dogfight with the military for example? The script gave no explanation why this character would be considered an enemy). Essentially it is more interested in looking good than BEING good. I've learned that when it comes to sequels or new productions of an old show in anime, you can't go home again.

Great film, but not the best release Dec 6 2011
Format:Blu-ray
The film it self is amazing, the image quality is superb; a vast improvement from the DVD version. However, they did not remaster the audio into 5.1, both audio tracks are in 2.0. Other than that the sound quality is great. The subtitles are in white and are perfectly legible on both HD and SD displays.
The CBC news scenes have a strange flickering effect (approx 13 minutes in) that wasn't there on the DVD version.

Unfortunately the Blu-ray is devoid of any extras. Gone are all of the Interviews, commentary track, storyboards, etc that were available on the DVD. There aren't even any trailers on the disc. All that remains is the film itself. On top of that, the French language track is missing, as well as the French subtitles. The subtitle tracks only come in English and Spanish.

Normally I'd give this film 5 stars, however due to all of the features that were available on the DVD and then stripped from the Blu-ray, this only gets 3 stars. It's alright it if you don't care about any of the extras, however, I'd recommend either waiting for a better release or sticking with the DVD.

Glorious Anime
The first time I saw this movie I was quite disappointed. The film, I felt, was highly un-Bebop (though I've only seen a couple episodes, so I ain't exactly knowledgable). Read more
