Product Description

Blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in an event film for summer 2011 that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way: Cowboys & Aliens.  Joined by an arsenal of top moviemakers—Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci—he brings an all-new action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world.

1875.  New Mexico Territory.  A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution.  The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist.  What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford).  It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky.  Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation.  As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force.  With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation.  United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival..

The script for Cowboys & Aliens is by Star Trek’s Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman  & Damon Lindelof (television’s Lost) and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, screen story by Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Steve Oedekerk, based on Platinum Studios’ “Cowboys & Aliens” created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Grazer, Howard, Rosenberg, Kurtzman and Orci produce.  Spielberg, Favreau, Denis L. Stewart, Bobby Cohen, Randy Greenberg and Ryan Kavanaugh executive produce.

This novelization is an exciting, action-packed story that starts with an amnesiac stranger and ends in a blaze of glory. Absolution, New Mexico, a town that lives in fear of its powerful benefactor, cattle baron Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde, is full of unhappy people--from the colonel's spoiled, directionless son who tries to drink it dry, to the doctor-turned-saloon-keeper stuck in the remains of what was once a gold-rush boom town, to the preacher who struggles to find meaning in a place that seems as lifeless as the arid desert around it.  But when a mysterious  stranger with an odd bit of hardware on his wrist arrives, he brings with him a new kind of trouble that nobody could imagine in their wildest dreams.

It's bad enough that the stranger is a wanted outlaw. But he's followed by murderous demons from the sky that attack the town and snatch away a bunch of townsfolk, including Dolarhyde's son. The posse that rides out to reclaim the abducted people encounters a series of obstacles that make the stranger's ominous presence seem almost like a good thing. Attacked by a murderous outlaw band, besieged by Apaches with no love for any white man,  and terrorized by the demons themselves and their terrible death-machines, no posse has ever had an adventure as strange as this one . . .

Alive with the color and spirit of the Old West and the sense of wonder of the most entertaining science fiction, this enthralling adventure is a unique and memorable experience readers won't want to miss.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, Aug 7 2011
By Larry - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Mass Market Paperback)
Since this is a novelization of a recent movie, let me start by saying I did see the movie last week. I liked the concept of the movie and thought it was worth seeing, but did not have much depth. Picked up the book today and read it and now really like the story line much more.

Joan Vinge did a nice job of filling in some the gaps in the characterization and motivations of the people in the story. This really added alot of depth and made it a much more believable and fun story to read.

If you have already seen the movie and did not absolutely hate it, then the book is a great read to fill in the gaps. However, if you are planning on seeing the movie next weekend you might want to buy the book and give it a quick read if you have time. I think this would make the movie even more fun to watch. Finally, even if you do not plan to see the movie, the book stands alone as a well written story.

4.0 out of 5 stars More In-depth than the Film, Sep 6 2011
By SciFiChick "The SciFiChick" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Mass Market Paperback)
A man awakens in the desert to complete memory loss. The only clue to his past is a picture of a young woman and a metal contraption locked around his forearm. When he arrives in a nearby town of Absolution, trouble isn't far behind. But when strange lights from the sky arrive and begin shooting up the town and abducting its residents, the survivors decide to risk all to hunt the kidnappers and find their loved ones.

While I loved the film, this novelization fills in the gaps and gives a much-needed look beneath the surface of the characters. Vinge does a fantastic job of giving more depth and humanity to the characters. And all of the drama, romance, and suspense of the film translated well to print.

I highly recommend seeing the movie first, then reading the novelization. The surprises and emotions are experienced better on-screen, and knowing some of it beforehand would probably lessen the impact. But for those, like me, who loved the film and the story and wanted more, this retelling in novel form was highly entertaining. Fast-paced and action-packed, Cowboys & Aliens is one fantastic mash-up of western and science fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exactly like the Movie, Dec 31 2011
By Readinista - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Mass Market Paperback)
Cowboys and Aliens by Joan D. Vinge is a novelization of the movie that came out in theaters in July 2011. If it hadn't been space month on the blog, I don't know if I would have normally picked out this book as I don't generally like seeing a movie before I read the book. However, I gave Cowboys and Aliens a try because I really enjoyed the movie and thought for sure I would enjoy the book. So for this review, I'm going to do a book vs. movie comparison.

The Movie

Cowboys and Aliens the movie stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, and many other great actors. I love all three of these actors and felt they all played their part exceptionally. I was particularly impressed with the transformation of Daniel Craig's British accent to a Western accent. He also fits in seamlessly to the Western setting and the cowboy look. Harrison Ford is awesome as usual. He pulls off the grumpy old cowboy persona very well. His character's voice is grizzled, well weathered, and fantastic and in many scenes he steals the show.

Olivia Wilde's character is also great but I wish the movie had gone more in depth with her. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford's characters were clearly defined and unfortunately her character was not, which is at no fault to Olivia Wilde. Her character, as it was written, is the one that I felt made the movie a little hokey. If they had given her a little more background, I might have accepted or understood her character better.

The movie combines the Western and Science Fiction genres well to create a completely original storyline. Overall, the movie is a fun ride that is unlike anything else in Hollywood at this time.

The Book

As indicated above, I listened to the audiobook and I highly recommend it. The narrator, Fred Berman, is phenomenal and does amazing voices for every character, and I really do mean every character. The author, Joan D. Vinge, is also talented and she does a wonderful job painting the settings, describing the action scenes, and putting the reader in the characters' shoes.

With that said, the book is pretty much exactly the same as the movie. The book does provide more details than the movie and the reader gets a little more information on the characters' backgrounds. Since I felt the movie lacked a little on the character backgrounds, I was glad to learn more about them and to see things from their perspective. However, there is not a lot of extra detail that the movie doesn't generally cover. I particularly wanted to learn more about Ella's character as she has a lot of mystery surrounding her. Unfortunately, the book did not deliver what I wanted. I understood her character better from the book but not a whole lot more.

The Winner

If you are trying to decide between reading the book or watching the movie, I recommend watching the movie over reading the book. Gasp! This is probably the first time that I thought a movie was better than the book. My reason for the recommending the movie is mainly because they are one in the same. Only the movie tells the story with great actors and tons of special effects and explosions. The story is also written for the big screen and I think that's where it should stay.
