As a producer, Jerry Bruckheimer makes movies for guys, mostly action films like Top Gun and Gone in 60 Seconds. The ones he makes that feature women, such as Flashdance and now Coyote Ugly, broaden their appeal with a fondness for "strong women." For Bruckheimer, that means self-determined, attractive women who don't need men to get what they want. Is there anything sexier than that? In Coyote Ugly, the charming young waif Piper Perabo stars as Violet, a New Jersey waitress who moves to New York to make it big as a songwriter. She has absolutely no idea how the music business works, relying instead on her faith in her own abilities. In order to make ends meet, she gets a job in a bar called Coyote Ugly, where the bartenders are scantily clad women who dance on the bar and order around their mostly male clientele. Really, they are strippers who don't have to take off their clothes. In fact, the owner (Maria Bello) orders them to enact the first rule of strip clubs: "Appear available but never be available." Bruckheimer is smart enough to focus on the naive girl instead of the seamier side of the story, following her as she realizes her dream and picks up a disposable but nice man along the way. Further "empowering" the female figures in the film, Zoe (Tyra Banks), the bartender whom Violet is replacing, leaves in order to go to law school. See? They're as smart as they are sexy! Then there's John Goodman, who turns in an absolutely charming performance as Violet's concerned father. This is a sweet and inoffensive film as long as you don't think too much about it. --Andy Spletzer

(REAL NAME)
Coyote Ugly is a movie about a young woman who moves from her father's home in New Jersey to New York City to become a singer/songwriter. To make ends meet, she finds employment at a bar and dates an Australian orphan. In the end, she succeeds and produces her own album. She stops working at the first bar because she's financially secure.

At first I thought this movie was for the men, not so, this is a definite chic flick (Although the men will enjoy it too, for obvious reasons). I really enjoyed the story line. This is one of those movies that I will gladly watch over and over.

2.0étoiles sur 5 An Barely OK Rendering On A Tired Motif, Juil 5 2004
Par collectivité (Havelock, NC USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
When Coyote Ugly was released four years ago, most reviewers said the movie was "more than chicks dancing on a bar". After seeing it, I agree. This movie is so predictible. Get a young, motivated, talented [but slightly immature] young girl out of Small Town, USA to Big City, USA to pursue her dream. Have her then hone her craft for various companies and getting rejected time and time again. Have her end up in a lonely diner with only a few dollars to her name. To remendy her cash problem, she gets a job at a sleazy bar. Over time, the bar overtakes her life, and she loses her boyfriend and dad in the process. In a realignment of priorties, she walks out of the bar, and refocuses on her dream. In the end she makes it.

That my friends, is the plot of this movie. For most people (myself included) this movie is a totally futile effort, topped by a totally annoying performance by Piper Perabo. The only people who might like this film are teens and twenty-somethings and those needing a little something to watch in the middle of the night (again, like myself).
