HASH(0x9d416390) out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Fiction-Craft Basics Jan. 16 2012
By C J Singh - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
CRAFTING NOVELS AND SHORT STORIES comprises brief articles by established authors of fiction and fiction-craft books. Of the 39 articles nearly half first appeared in "Writer's Digest" magazine and more than a score are by authors of fiction-craft books published by Writer's Digest Books.

In the foreword, James Scott Bell writes: "When I was trying to figure out how to write, I devoured the fiction column in `Writer's Digest,' then inked by the great Lawrence Block. I read it every month as if it were a sacred page." The contributors include: James Scott Bell, author of "Plot and Structure"; Nancy Kress, author of "Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint: Techniques for Dynamic Characters" and Donald Maass, author of "The Breakout Novelist." All three bestselling books, published by Writer's Digest Books.

The 39 articles are grouped under seven sections:
*Characters--The Stakeholders in Your Story;
*Plot & Conflict--Your Story's Action & Suspense;
*Point of View--The Voice of Your Story;
*Setting & Backstory--The Context for Your Story;
*Dialogue: What Your Characters Say to Each Other;
*Description & Word Choice: What You Tell Readers; and
*Revision: How Your Story Comes Together

The front cover touts the book as "The Complete Guide to Writing Creating Great Fiction." Complete? What about other fiction-craft books from Writer's Digest? No need to buy those?

A subtitle such as "A Complete Overview of Fiction-Craft Basics" would more accurately describe the brief articles in this excellent introductory book.

HASH(0x9f3c24b0) out of 5 stars Good and Plenty July 14 2013

This is good, practical advice by people who have published many novels and stories--in some cases 2 or 3 and in other 80 or 90! It is advice that worked for them. It is a book to refer to again and again. I like the organization and the brevity of the articles. It doesn't waste too much time on puff, just "here is how I do it and here is how you can do it" type advice. Veery nice and worth the price.
HASH(0x9dbbb468) out of 5 stars A handy and practical reference for writers Oct. 29 2015

This book is great. I constantly refer to it as I work on my writing. There are useful exercises, which if, like me, you are prone to buying writing books, you will appreciate for their practicality. And it is set up clearly, if you need advice on something specific. But it is a pleasure to browse it as well. In fact, I purchased a hard copy to browse, because my kindle edition wasn't working as well for that purpose. So, I bought two versions of this book. I must like it.

HASH(0x9d48f1d4) out of 5 stars Good for the basics. May 8 2012

This is pretty simple stuff, sort of midrange for most authors. However, if you don't know it yet then it's a good read. I would recommend it for those newer to the business and wanting perspective on a wide range of issues.

Format and Structure:
Very tidy. Subjects are ordered well.

More towards long form writers. Some short form information.

5/5. This is a good book for a brush up or an education. For advanced writers it won't be an eyeopener, but good for perspective and nostalgia value.

Buy it if you are new to the game. Sample first if you've done you time. A great first writing book.

HASH(0x9d58d57c) out of 5 stars A valuable tool for any writer... Jan. 5 2013
By J. L. - Published on
Format: Paperback
I've been writing for 13 or so years, but just for fun. I still write for fun and don't publish, but I know I have much to learn about creating book store worthy novels, even if I have to plan no publish any of my pieces. I want them to be as good as I can make them.

This book has helped me a lot. I have never actually finished a story before. I could never figure out how to end it, or I would leave too many questions unanswered. For the first time I finished my book after getting this book for Christmas. It gave me the confidence I needed to add important information to my story to make it flow, and let me know I needed to tweak a few things. I will recommend this book. I think high school and college professors should use this book in their curriculum.
