Crazy, Stupid, Love (DVD)

Amazon.ca

Crazy, Stupid, Love is a romantic comedy with a big heart--a refreshing change from its Hangover-laden compatriots, and almost a throwback to a golden era of romance. For Crazy, Stupid, Love relies on the sharp writing by Dan Fogelman (animated hits like Bolt, Tangled) and the sparkly chemistry of its cast, led by Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, and the emerging superstar Emma Stone. It's not that the plot is ground-breaking--maybe, in fact, the appeal of Crazy, Stupid, Love is that it's all too relatable. Cal (Carell) is long married to Emily (Moore), until one day she drops divorce on him, out of the blue. Stunned, Cal tries to reassemble his life as a woefully unprepared single guy. Enter Jacob (Gosling, who's never been better) as a happy bachelor whose tips for Cal will be ones that even the most happily wed female viewers will secretly want their mates to hear. Marisa Tomei has a hilarious turn as a temptress who's way out of Cal's league. And Stone is the fresh-faced, fearless young woman who shakes the confident Jacob's supposedly solid world view.

But it's the interplay between the characters, the true humanness of their emotions--long missing from many contemporary "romantic comedies"--that set Crazy, Stupid, Love in a class of its own. Moore is more than just the weary, accusatory neglected wife--someone who's never stopped believing in the spark of love. Gosling could easily be his generation's Cary Grant--assured, quick-witted, sly, yet vulnerable. Carell once again shows his dramatic capabilities on top of his impeccable comic timing. And Stone is a revelation, lovely, delicate, vulnerable but strong. Crazy, Stupid, Love will reaffirm the viewer's belief in all that's possible. Call us crazy. --A.T. Hurley

As comedies go, I think this is probably one of the better ones you will see this year.

Steve Carell plays Cal, a husband who splits from his high school sweetheart, played by Julianne Moore, after she cheats. Hanging out in single bars every nights he sees this ladies man played by Ryan Gosling successfully pick up numerous women, while he says out loud to anyone who will listen, 'my wife cheated on me with xxxx.'

Meanwhile his teenage son has the hots for his babysitter, while the babysitter crushes on Cal. We have 4 romantic triangles between the main characters, that are developed to great comic effect.

So, Ryan Gosling's character takes him under his wing, as his wing man, and shows him how to score with the ladies, which leads to many interesting twists and turns.

There were several parts of this movie that made me cringe, one was the patheticness of the character played by Steve Carell. The teenage crush made me cringe a little, especially with the absurd things this kid did to get her attention.

In fairness this was more than balanced with some high quality scenes and interactions, particularly the scenes with Marisa Tomei, who I thought was absolutely brilliant, especially when her simmering emotions boil over at the parent teacher meeting.

The Dirty Dancing routine between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone was simply movie magic, and one of the best scenes I have seen all year, two quality actors, chemistry, everything, perfect.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Ryan Gosling may be one the best actors on the planet. You probably know him from The Notebook, a perennial top 100 rental on leading dvd rental sites. He has studously avoided the mainstream doing indie and art house movies.

Having seen this at the movie I decided it was one to add to my collection of movies. Love can be crazy and stupid I can attest to that and this movie is a no brainer, sometimes you just need to laugh and feel good. By the way the condition that this movie arrived in was excellent and the service that Amazon provides is excellent also.

This movie made me (and the two others I watched with) laugh a lot, sometimes uncontrollably. Admittedly there are moments in the movie that are awkwardness personified, but they are part of the charm. I have not been as thoroughly entertained by a movie in a long time.

I'm not sure, however, if it will hold up as well to a second viewing. So much of the humor is based on unexpected plot twists that I don't think it would be as funny a second time around.

Everyone was perfectly cast in this movie, Steve Carrel gave a particularly moving performance as the father who is suddenly out of his family and the subplot between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone was brilliant as it did not give anything away. The two younger kids were cast quite nicely as well and they brought everything to a head.

It's crazy just how ridiculous love can be sometimes. This movie not only shows the real side but the comedic side as well.

Yet another movie that holds true to life as many of us know it. Really great movie on multiple levels; realistic, funny, touching, and just when you think you know what's going to happen next....

This movie was an unexpected surprise, I was prepared to watch something super cheesy & clichéd, but I was wrong. It deals with real family issues & is something that younger people can relate to (12+). All characters had great chemistry & each actor did a fabulous job.

The BluRay: Great quality, no issues. There are no special features, but I wasn't looking for any, so it's all good.

Overall: I highly recommend this for everyone, it's not exactly a chick-flick, it's a good movie for most people & it has some good messages.
