Product Description

Taking the stance that the mainstream media sugarcoats Canada's involvement in the U.S.'s war in Afghanistan—and equates "supporting the troops" with supporting the war—this analysis looks at Canada's role in light of the politics of oil and U.S. imperialism, making heated calls for Canada's withdrawal. It is argued that the intent of capturing Osama bin Laden was merely a guise for the U.S.'s desire to dominate internationally, and that Canada's historical role of essentially following U.S. foreign policy makes it impossible to justify their continued presence and should be questioned more fervently as an imperialist quest for oil and gas resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars we are all responsible to understand afghanistan, Jun 18 2008

This review is from: Creating a Failed State: The U.S. and Canada in Afghanistan (Paperback)
If you are a responsible person who has a certain love for your country, be it the US or Canada, this is the book to read to see if the war that has moved Canada from its traditional image of peacekeeper to one of aggressor is warranted. Although it may be difficult to take the time to read this well researched text, and painful to look at what is happening to the people there and to our own youthful soldiers, it is necessary. Only by understanding the role of Afghanistan's sad history, can one come to a sound understanding. In my opinion, that history is included in Creating a Failed State which makes the book not only interesting, but also able to generate a realistic analysis. Thoroughly researched and current, the text provides the reader with an understanding of the events in Afghanistan that are never heard in mainstream media with its imbedded journalistic reports. Especially interesting is the role of the US's desire for control of the region's oil pipelines which necessitates its control of the country. This is the real root cause of the US lead aggression not any interest in democracy for the country, the status of women nor the discovery of the US's old friend, Osama bin Laden.

5.0 out of 5 stars necessary background for understanding today's conflict, Feb 10 2010
By Elish - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Creating a Failed State: The U.S. and Canada in Afghanistan (Paperback)
John Warnock provides much needed background for understanding US and by extension Canadian involvement in Afghanistan. Western, esp. US action in this region is far more sinister than the mainstream media lead us to believe, and Warnock outlines how it was the anti-Communist zeal of the US which was responsible for much of the misogynist developments that have taken place in Afghanistan since the Soviet Union's withdrawal. Contrary to popular belief, much of the loathsome misogynist legislation attributed to the Taliban was actually put in place by the US-backed mullahs who took power after the USSR's withdrawal. In fact, the wrath of the conservative mujahideen who were backed by the US was due in large part to the Communist regime's spread of literacy and rights for women. It is easy to target the Taliban, but anyone interested in justice and peace in the region needs to understand the background and consequences of Western involvement. This book provides just that.
